Housework wards off breast cancer
Housework wards off breast cancer

By Nic Fleming Medical Correspondent
Last Updated: 1:33am GMT 29/12/2006

Women who keep their homes clean and tidy are less likely to develop breast cancer than those who let the dust and dishes pile up, according to a new report.

Researchers found regular moderate exercise such as housework provides greater protection from the disease than more strenuous but less frequent sporting activity.

Being active in the home cut the likelihood of pre-menopausal women developing breast cancer by 29 per cent compared with being inactive, and reduced the risk for post-menopausal women by 19 per cent.

Around 44,100 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year and more than 12,400 women die from the disease. Physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight have also been found to reduce the risk of some cancers in men.

Previous studies have identified a link between exercise and reduced breast cancer risk in post-menopausal women, but this is one of the first to include a large number of pre-menopausal women.

1. Housework?
Sheesh. Why housework, why didn't the author write 'exercise'?

What if dust and lemon oil increase the likelihood of cancer?:eyes:

6. "why didn't the author write 'exercise'"
The observation does not prove that. This is not a controlled experiment, but only an observation of a correlation. They don't know if the exercise does it or something they have not thought of yet.

10. OK, I'll go with my initial opinion that this is a dumb 'observation'.
Just sounds kind of silly to me; not a scientist or even an observationist!

2. Correlation does not prove causation.

 I'll risk it and keep my bi-monthly cleaning service.

Guess I just like to live dangerously ... focus energy on yard and home repairs. ;)

On edit: Because I'm left handed, *research* deems that I will die younger than the average right hander. What they fail to control for is other variables that may be tied to this "housework" and, perhaps even more strongly correlates with the significant decrease in incidents of breast cancer.

But NO! The M$M dare not stray from dumbing us down.

3. I wonder if it's the type of exercise? (Lots of work with your arms).
I have tried an exercise for keeping the lymphatic fluids moving around the breast area which is supposed to help prevent breast cancer. It actually feels really great when I do it, but it seems to me as if this could be related - since the movement is similar. It would also explains increases in the rates of breast cancer with being sedentary.

4. Does this apply to men too?
Cause I bet that they would have left it at "regular moderate exercise" if this article were aimed at men and not women.

12. Can't tell. Not enough of us do any housework to find out.
It's not that I leave it for women to do. I just don't care if it gets done or not.

16. Did it ever occur to anyone that women who let the dust and dishes
pile up are clinically depressed and that is what makes them more susceptible?

What a load of crap. :puke:
