"You're a goddamned genius!"
Edited on Fri Dec-29-06 05:07 PM by StrictlyRockers
There is a scene in the movie Forest Gump when the mentally retarded Forrest is in basic training with the U.S. Army:

Drill Sergeant: Gump! What's your sole purpose in this army?

Forrest Gump: To do whatever you tell me, drill sergeant!

Drill Sergeant: God damn it, Gump! You're a goddamned genius! This is the most outstanding answer I have ever heard. You must have a goddamn I.Q. of 160. You are goddamned gifted, Private Gump.

Anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

Just what makes someone a "genius" anyway?

(edited because I spelled genius wrong) :P

4. As any veteran will tell you, this is exactly right
If my CO told me to do something that could lead to my own death, I would have done it. To fully follow orders is considered normal.

They don't put you through boot camp so you can think for yourself.

8. Oh you can still think for yourself; actions are entirely different matter.
To quote my TI from back in the Balloon Corps days, "We can't make you do a damn thing; we can make you wish you had." You didn't want to find out what they could do; so you followed orders.

9. This veteran disagrees.
When they took us out and showed us what machine guns could do by loading a couple of them with tracers and shooting them across an open field. Followed by "how to attack a machine gun nest" which involved half of my platoon going around the flank while the rest of us suckers planted our trusty M1s on her hips and marched "at a brisk pace while firing from the hip" into the machine guns to "distract" them. I decided then and there that if any idiot ever told me to stand up and walk straight into machine guns, there was going to be one helluva fight. And, I had a gun.

6. Well, For The Armed Services That Is In Fact An Extremely Accurate Answer.
In only the rarest of exceptions, it is absolutely necessary for there to be unwavering loyalty, obedience and chain of command in the military.

10. According to Joe Theismann,
"Nobody in the game of football should be called a genius. A genius is somebody like Norman Einstein."
