So we (wife, granddaughter and I ) went down to Houston to spend Christmas with the in-laws (congenital republicans all). They have been pretty subdued for quite a while now, although still get the occasional bullshit Clinton story. Spent the whole week and left for home in Kansas yesterday morning. Was just getting on Interstate 45 when there's this big bump and rear wheel of my pickup passes me, rolls up the ramp, across 4 lanes of traffic and comes to rest against the center barrier. Looking at the axle the mechanics and I determined the most likely cause was the removal of 3 adjacent lug nuts and loosening the other 3, which broke off from stress. Now of course this is all conjecture and no way I know of to confirm what happened. But my vehicle was certainly the only one in the whole neighborhood with a Veterans for Kerry and various anti * stickers displayed. Tried again today and got home with no further problems or unpleasantness beyond seeing my first "Condi in '08" sticker.
Everyone have a Happy and Safe New Year!

I watch Washington Journal and from the calls by some wingnuts they are mean and angry. beyond all reality. And then, there was that freeper who sent "white powder" letters to Olbermann, Pelosi, ect., ect. You just never know what these people are like and are capable of.

When torqued to specification (usually around 100 ft-lbs for aluminum wheels) lug nuts just don't back off by themselves. Was this a really old vehicle with rusty lugs, bad threads and such? If so, replace that stuff. If not, you can be fairly certain that someone loosened your lug nuts and it is not a matter of conjecture.
