3. It's not genocide
It's a brutal land war. The killings and rapes are to terrorize, not to exterminate. And it's an atrocious part of an uneven conflict involving two sides.

Does that excuse it? Of course not. But if we want to resolve it we need to be clear about what's happening. It's a war, and both sides need to be told we've had enough.

7. I guess that reasoning would make the Reich's
extermination of the Jews not genocide since they were stealing any property the Jews had complete to the gold in their teeth and the skin off their backs.

11. It Meets And Exceeds The Legal Definition Of Genocide, Mr. P
"Both sides" do not have to be told to stop: the criminal agents of a criminal government need to be stopped, and words will not do it.

13. Yes it is
They are deliberately killing a specific ethnic group in large numbers, that classifies as genocide.

14. It is genocide. Genocide in responce to a rebellion. Ethnic cleansing and
throwing children into fires & rape is genocide. No other way to describe it.

4. Amazing isn't it? If these killings were happening against a predominately white Christian nation
the US would have boots on the ground right especially if Darfur had some oil.

5. Who goes?
My problem with the DU and Darfur is, who goes?

Who goes to sit in a equatorial country, no shower for 7 weeks, hauling bags of rice to poor and desperate people, while other poor and desperate people are given ak's by a local militia to take pot shots at the them?

And who determines they should go.

12. The Government Side, Ma'am, And The Janjeweed
Fancy themselves Arabs, and describe themselves as Arab, and express great contempt for Blacks they murder and torment, and view as inferior to them. Doubtless a Charleston auctioneer circa 1850 would see no difference between them and a Bantu, but that is not how they see themselves.

The great majority of Moslems who describe themselves as Arabs are not, in fact, Arabs in any genuine terms of ethnic descent. The Arabian wave of conquest in the early years of Isalmic expansion was nowhere near numerous enough to repopulate the areas it seized, but as they ruled the places, Arab was certainly the thing to be.

20. Both Sides are Muslim, Not Arabs
Both the Government/Janjaweed troops and the Darfur natives are Muslims, most likely Sunni. Shi'ites tend to be in the Iran/Iraq/Syria/Lebanon area. People get confused because the last big fight in Sudan was between the Muslim north and Christian/animist south that has all of the oil. However, there's an uneasy truce between sides right now. Darfur is an inter-tribal conflict between herders and farmers that has gone radically out of control. Although I agree that it's genocide, there's not a whole lot that outsiders can do about it because of religion, geography, and it being an internal Sudanese conflict.

Apparently, there's a racist pecking order among Moslems in that part of the world, with the Gulf Arabs (Saudis) being at the top, and Black Africans at the bottom.

21. Janjaweed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janjaweed

snip....

The Janjaweed are a militia drawn from Darfurian and Chadian Arab-speaking tribes that became notorious for massacre, rape and forced displacement in 2003-2004.

The Janjaweed first emerged in 1988 after Chadian President Hissène Habré, backed by France and the United States, defeated the Libyan army, thereby ending Col. Muammar al-Gaddafi’s territorial designs on Chad. Libya’s Chadian protégé, Acheickh Ibn Omer Saeed, retreated with his Arab militia forces to Darfur, where they were hosted by Sheikh Musa Hilal, the newly-elevated chief of the Mahamid Rizeigat Arabs of north Darfur. Hilal’s tribesmen had earlier smuggled Libyan weapons to Ibn Omer’s forces. A French-Chadian incursion destroyed Ibn Omer’s camp, but his weapons remained with his Mahamid hosts, along with an Arab supremacist ideology associated with the Libyan-sponsored ‘Arab Reunion’.

Throughout the 1990s, the Janjaweed were an amalgam of Chadian and Darfurian "Arab" militia, tolerated by the Sudan Government, pursuing local agendas of controlling land. The majority of Darfur’s Arabs, the Baggara confederation, were and remain uninvolved in the war. In 1999-2000, faced with threats of insurgencies in Western and Northern Darfur, Khartoum’s security armed the Janjaweed forces. When the insurgency escalated in February 2003, spearheaded by the Sudan Liberation Movement, and the Justice and Equality Movement, the Sudanese Government responded by utilizing the Janjaweed as its main counter-insurgency force. Protracting the militia to attack and recover the rebel held areas of Darfur, the Janjaweed however conducted a scorched earth campaign of mass atrocity targeting civilians in the region of Darfur. A large number of world leaders and countries have declared the Janjaweed killings in Darfur to be genocide, since they have killed an estimated 100,000 civilians in the last three years. The U.S. State Department and others in 2004 named leading Janjaweed commanders including Musa Hilal as suspected genocide criminals. The UN Security Council called for the Janjaweed to be disarmed.

6. It's important to keep in mind that...
....the events in Sudan and Darfur have absolutely nothing to do with religion.
I might be for intervention, but we've spent all our alleged 'humanitarian currency' years ago, IMO.
We have no right to play mighty mouse anymore, if we ever did. It's up to the UN or other neighboring countries to take action. If the UN, then the U.S. should withold forces and material to levels that do not exceed the contribution of the smallest member nation.

8. I am afraid that this type of thing is going to be seen more often
as we get further into global warming and water shortages, not to mention oil peak and epidemics. People will either wander around as unwanted refugees or enter into wars for territory. We need to begin to work with other countries and decide what is the best way to intervene without destroying ourselves with overstretch/economic ruin. I do not see *ss doing anything about it because he loves the chaos.
