Saddam execution video draws criticism
By ANITA CHANG, Associated Press Writer

Grainy cell phone video of Saddam Hussein's execution triggered international criticism Tuesday, with Britain's deputy prime minister calling the leaked images "unacceptable" and the Vatican decrying the footage as a "spectacle" violating human rights.

Meanwhile, the Italian government pushed for a U.N. moratorium on the death penalty, Cuba called the execution "an illegal act," and Sunnis in Iraq took to the streets in mainly peaceful demonstrations across the country.

The unofficial video showed a scene that stopped just short of pandemonium, during which one person is heard shouting "To hell!" at the deposed president and Saddam is heard exchanging insults with his executioners. The inflammatory footage also showed Saddam plummeting through the gallows trapdoor and dangling in death.

....

The Holy See's daily, L'Osservatore Romano, lamented that "making a spectacle" of the execution had turned capital punishment into "an expression of political hubris."

The execution "represented, for the ways in which it happened and for the media attention it received, another example of the violation of the most basic rights of man," L'Osservatore wrote.

As I was saying...

4. Scuse me: the VIDEO draws criticism?
Any video is just a recording of an event.

Sounds like they're shooting a hi-tech messenger to me.

7. I think it should have been recorded
I personally haven't seen the entire video but I have seen enough to know that a record is needed in these events. In a side not I quit watching snuff films after I saw one of the American journalists getting his head sawed with a steak knife. I don't believe everyone should watch it but I liked to know what the situation surrounding his last minutes were. And the taunting and interruption of his last prayer demonstrate what kind of government we are establishing in Iraq.

13. Yeah it actually probably good that
this got out there, cause it is disgraceful that even a monster like Saddam didn't have some dignity to his death as he met his maker.

9. I wish there was a better word
than barbaric, but I can't think of one. Barbaric in every sense of the word.

The world has recently begun shedding itself of, at least, this one form of barbarism. We're lagging behind. We're still involved with shit like that. We're becoming the bad guys. We're not the guys with the white hats anymore.

This country COULD be so great!

10. This is why all executions should be taped and broadcast on the airwaves
Enough of hiding the shit away!

If it is going to be legal, people should have to watch every second...

How long will the death penalty stand in this country then?

11. Most Executions in the US are by Lethal Injection.
Not much to see unless something goes wrong with the procedure. It is now a Clinical Death or as some put it; State Sanctioned Murder.

12. Actually there is a lot to see with lethal injections and they do go wrong
quite often...

The spin is that they are painless and humane.
