Poll question: POLL: Is Bush an Asshole or a Douche? |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 01:46 PM by Proud2BAmurkin
Most of the country just ridicules Bush now.
Before, the people who disapproved had anger toward him but didn't laugh at him as much as they do now, which means back then he appeared to be more of an asshole than a douche.
Now that he's been exposed as ridiculous buffoon but still tries to pretend he's not an AWOL coward, he is clearly not an asshole but a douche.
Agree?

We're biochemically predisposed to at least acknowledge the differences. Personally, I think it's more insulting to women to suggest that bush has any feminine qualities at all than it is to call him a douche, but that's me. ;)

51. I'm not justifying anything, I'm plainly speaking my position on this particular case. |
|
I don't rank the use of the word "douche" as an insult very highly on the sexism scale. If that were the worst level of sexism we had to address, there wouldn't be much of a problem at all. I didn't say you were wrong for pointing it out though, I agreed with you. I simply tried to put it into perspective. Calling bush a douche is nowhere near a man striking a woman or even a woman suggesting all men should be castrated. It's about the same as calling laura bush a dirty jock strap, and I'm just not that moved by it as an example of bigotry. Again, if that were the worst example of bigotry we had to address, the battle would almost be over.

is that no one ever calls Laura a "dirty jock strap". But the word douche gets used in GD all the time. It's just an issue of the general culture in here. And just because it isn't the worst thing they call us, that doesn't mean they should be allowed to think it's ok.
And I've always wondered what's going through men's heads when they use that word. It's not an insult that gets used much in public in the part of the country I live in.

56. It's just a catch phrase insult people usually don't think about before using. |
|
I think it's good when people like you bring up how it can be considered sexist, as I don't think it crosses peoples' minds most of the time. It's kind of like using "gay" or "retarded" as an insult. And while I don't personally use them (I prefer good ol' profanity, myself), I think I may shed some light on why people in general do.
The thing about insults is that they are supposed to be insulting to the target. When insulting a man who has issues with proving his masculinity, using words like "douche" and "bitch" are extremely effective as they address the targets weaknesses and insecurities. As many men share these insecurities, feminine terminology is often used as a form of insult - not because the name caller is sexist or hates women, but because the target of the insult is hurt more by those words. In this case, they become the better weapon. If the target is homophobic or worried other may think they're homosexual, words like "gay" are the better weapon. If the target is worried about appearing unintelligent, words like "retarded" are the better weapon against them.
Again, I'm not advocating the use of these words, I'm simply trying to explain their use.

"When insulting a man who has issues with proving his masculinity, using words like "douche" and "bitch" are extremely effective as they address the targets weaknesses and insecurities. As many men share these insecurities, feminine terminology is often used as a form of insult - not because the name caller is sexist or hates women, but because the target of the insult is hurt more by those words."
Don't kid yourself. Don't justify it: "not because the name caller is sexist or hates women." Please think that through.

|
I'm not kidding myself, and I have thought it through. I understand that you don't know me beyond what you've read of my stuff here, but you're wrong about me here. Insults are tailored to the person insulted, not to anyone else the words used may apply - that's a tertiary factor seldom considered by the person using them beyond their effectiveness as an insult. Does the choice of wording reflect on the person using it? Of course. However, people who are upset often say things they wouldn't otherwise, and I don't believe one's choice of insult reflects as much on the insulter as on the person they insult (or at least their perception of that person). I'm right here, and I'm not saying sexism is acceptable.

And in the "general culture," sexism --as stated in DU Rules-- "cheapens the discourse for everyone." It makes people look ignorant. It "normalizes" bigotry. It's divisive. It's hateful. It's status quo. SNAFU.
You're right. "Douche" may be at the low end on a sliding scale of sliminess. Don't overlook, though, the fact that the OP title and brief set-up for the poll is all based on some apparently significant DISTINCTION between one term and the other. Aside from the whole premise being a bunch of bullshit, the association of one term with female hygeine is unavoidable. Oh-- by the way, the one that's "ridiculous" and laughable, vs. "angering" and threatening.
At least we understand male subtlety a bit better now. :sarcasm:
Sexism is a dealbreaker. We may share common goals. But bigotry severs other ties. It is hypocritical and the bigot cannot be believed.

59. I don't agree that the poll was based on a significant distinction between the terms. |
|
I took it more as a joke in that both are unpleasant. Until you objected in the first place, which was after my initial post, it didn't even occur to me that it would be taken as sexist.
I'm not sure where you're going with your sarcastic point about male subtlety when arguing against sexism, but I'll point that out.
And if sexism is a dealbreaker, we can never have a deal, as sexism is alive, well and institutionalized. So, unless you're declaring sex war, you might want to reevaluate putting the use of "douche" into perspective with the real threats of sexism out there.
I like that quote about feminism by the way, and I agree with it.

|
OP: "Now that he's been exposed as ridiculous buffoon but still tries to pretend he's not an AWOL coward, he is clearly not an asshole but a douche."
The :sarcasm: is that this even IS "male subtlety"-- which, apparently it is, only you don't see-- oops, "agree"-- that the poll set-up choice between This or That HINGED on that distinction............................
As for "declaring sex war" how about DEinstitutionalizing sexism? Are you telling me that SNAFU status quo sexism is all right with you because it is so institutionalized?
I'm sorry you didn't want to think through the ill-logic above there... just think about it. Sometime.
Yes it is a dealbreaker. What is wrong with having integrity enough for shared political values that it includes treating women as egalitarian partners and not as The Other; not treat The Feminine as a "more effective weapon" to insult and humiliate insecure and fearful men?

I think maybe you are the one who needs to spend some time thinking more about this, because I see your point as well as mine and you seem limited to your own.

68. Wow, you're something else today. I'm not worried about it, but I'm not leaving it at that. |
|
I said again and again that I understand how the word "douche" is sexist and that I basically agreed with you, just not in the same proportion. I attempted to explain to you why I think people use words like "douche" and why I don't agree that it is as big a deal as you've made it out to be. You got progressively irritated and hostile towards me, beginning with joking condescension and claims that I didn't understand. I pointed out the hypocrisy of your being somewhat sexist in your complaints about the sexism of the use of "douche," and that you are the one closing the conversation on sexism if you require there to be none before you talk as it is obviously prevalent today. You must've taken that as my acceptance or defense of sexism, which it wasn't. My assertion that you were taking this personally wasn't calling this your "personal problem," rather it was an acknowledgment of your increasingly hostile tone and obvious emotional attachment to the subject. I'm sorry I didn't make my understanding of the subject clear enough for you to believe it.
