Schwarzenegger aims to cut welfare
Tom Chorneau, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau

Sunday, January 7, 2007

(01-07) 19:34 PST Sacramento -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to cut almost $500 million from welfare programs next year and impose new rules aimed at pushing recipients off public assistance and into the workforce, senior administration officials said Sunday.

The Republican governor, who proclaimed during his second inaugural speech Friday that he would lead California into an era free of partisan politics, will propose in his state budget to eliminate a cost of living increase for welfare grants next year -- a proposal that has in the past drawn an almost automatic rebuke from the Legislature's Democratic majority.

He also wants to end the practice of providing welfare grants to children whose parents are chronically unemployed and failing to participate in return to work programs.

The administration said the two ideas would save the state $465 million next year.

Critics say the proposal would put tens of thousands of children at risk of homelessness. They call the ideas a poor first step in Schwarzenegger's new bipartisan agenda.

9. You said it!
My thoughts precisely. He played with a couple of green/progressive ideas before the election -- just enough to make lots of Californians think maybe he wasn't so bad after all.

:grr:

Now that he's been recoronated, he's back to his original, real, ugly, reTHUG self again. Let's see if the Dems in the state legislature can put the skids under him.

5. I wish somebody would lead a coalition of the homeless
to camp on their acres of estates, especially those with children. It would be a way of getting through to them.

12. Like the Bonus Army that paid Herbert Hoover a visit?

Congress had overridden Herbert Hoover’s veto of a veterans’ compensation act early in 1932, which provided some relief for ex-servicemen, but also fueled sentiment for having payments made in cash. Such requests were swiftly rejected by Republican leaders who believed that such irresponsible action would only deepen the nation’s woes.

In late May, a group of veterans numbering around 1,000 came to Washington, D.C. to lobby for their cause. Many of these were unemployed and homeless, and they vowed to remain in the nation’s capital until favorable legislation was passed. As the weeks went by, the so-called Bonus Expeditionary Force (BEF) grew to more than 17,000. Many of these took up residence at a camp outside of the city on the banks of the Anacostia River*; others made homes for themselves in vacant government buildings and even on the lawn of the Capitol. Despite the swelling numbers, the on-going demonstrations remained essentially peaceful.

Ended up being tear-gassed by General McArthur

7. I don't think so, Grope.
This ranks right up there with his proposal to euthanize animals to save money which lasted about 48 hours.

What an idiot.

19. No........let the poor AMERICAN kids die
so the illegals can have the American dream and universal health care. MY kids never had that privilege growing up......of having affordable health care. Oh well......some people are more worthy of it than others,I guess. Whatever.

10. I was wondering how he was going to pay for the illegal alien health care plan.
Somehow I knew the money wasn't going to come from anything connected to the rich, or fines placed on those who hire illegals.

14. Hey!! He needs that money to fund the prison state.
How can he run the largest, most profitable, prison system in the world if he has to worry about providing food, housing and healthcare to children?

Give the Gropenfurhur a break OK.

16. Where's link to story about ONE delinquent taxpayer finally paying $200,000,000?
in back taxes and penalties? ONE GUY! So, how about they stop picking on the poor and start going after other fat cat scoff-laws? Seems like the payoff would be better.

Guess the poor kids don't have big law firms to protect them by dragging things out with the tax man.
