Edmonton Journal: Big Easy murders
Wife of Edmonton-raised doctor New Orleans' 14th homicide victim since Dec. 29

EDMONTON - The shooting of an Edmonton-raised doctor in New Orleans and the murder of his filmmaker wife has sickened even those residents numbed to the violence of the city.

Many say they are ready to give up on New Orleans and move.

"People are freaked out," said Brad Everson, a family friend of Dr. Paul Gailiunas and his wife, Helen Hill. "They are scared. They are mad as hell."

Citizens groups plan to march on New Orleans City Hall on Thursday to demand change. "If I don't see some kind of improvement this year, then we'll think about leaving seriously," Everson said.

Another family friend, David Sullivan, is also reconsidering his future in the city. "It has shaken us all up and made us start thinking about why are we here.
