Bush leans to phasing in new Iraq troops

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush's new plan for Iraq, due this week, is leaning toward phasing in some 20,000 additional U.S. troops, Washington sources tell CNN.

Bush is to deliver his plan, which has the working title "A New Way Forward," on Wednesday and sources said while it is not finalized, won't call for a massive influx of troops in and around Baghdad all at once.

Some elements favored by the Democrats and the Iraq Study Group have been woven into the plan, such as deploying some U.S. troops to Kuwait and bolstering U.S. training of Iraqi troops, CNN said.

so, he'll try to sneak them in . . . no matter, escalation is escalation. That's far from what voters demanded in November.

16. I think "they" got it from the ISG report cover and then rejected just
about all of the reports conclusions and suggestions.

A New Way Forward ..... just meaningless words to cover
bush's ass.

BTW I friend's son is going to Iraq as a hummer driver because of
this stupid plan.

10. Bush doesn't HAVE 20,000 troops to put into Iraq all at once.
God knows what measures they'll resort to to come up with these numbers. Perhaps they'll send some of the more severely wounded troops back to the front lines. They're already sending back troops with serious psychological problems which should exclude them from combat.

15. at any rate, if this was allowed, Bush could effectively cut off the possibility of ANY reduction
by insisting that he hadn't achieved his troop level goal, therefore, forestalling 'success' which he'd say is still in the works.

This has to be rejected outright and some compromise has to be advanced by our leadership which is a real plan to exit, instead of this transparent ploy to stay put.

18. the whole long-term nature of this planned deployment should be a non-starter
with the leaders of our Democratic majority, apart from the whole question of why we need a 'surge' as part of an exit plan (which Bush's plan is not)

21. sounds like digging in for 2 years or more to me
there is no report of any planned reduction of force coming from the WH. That's a non-starter right there. Voters demanded an exit and Bush is set to offer a long-term escalation.

Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 09:08 AM by SpiralHawk
Usually he just fails all at once, like with Katrina and on 9/11.

It still sucks.

We need a real commander for our troops, not a deserter preppy cheerleader.

24. They only have, according to the military, nine thousand troops
available.

Kind of reminds me of the three legged pig.
When the farmer was asked why the pig had only three legs, he recited quite a litany of how the pig was so well loved by the community, how he had alerted the family when the house caught fire at night and saved the family, and how the pig went to church with them every sunday and even sang in the choir.

Frustrated, the nosy reporter asked what that had to do with the pig having three legs.
The farmer replied' "Well, you don't expect we'd eat a pig like this all at once, do you?"

Bush is doing his absolute best to destroy this country and trying to keep anyone from noticing.

25. Making a "strategy" out of necessity
He doesn't have 20,000 troops to drop all at once.

That said, this is even more asinine, possibly, than the escalation itself. Imagine American generals in WWII saying "Let's only put one battalion into Normandy at a time." Good idea.
