Geraldo Rivera Describes Olbermann As A "Midget, Punk, Slimeball" & Threatens to Beat Him Up

So here's one I missed over the holidays -- Geraldo Rivera coming to town and threatening to beat up on Keith Olbermann.

Apparently Geraldo was visiting with 104.1 FM's Monsters just before Christmas, when they asked him about the time he made international headline for disclosing too much information about troops in Iraq. Geraldo claimed the incident was blown out of proportion, largely by NBC -- and specifically Olbermann. Geraldo then began mumbling semi-audible names, seemingly meant to describe Olbermann: "midget ... punk ... slimeball."

But then, with the Monsters helpful prodding, Geraldo went a step further, leaving no doubt about what he was saying. He called Olbermann a coward -- specifically a " who wouldn't walk across the street against the red light."

He then said he was ready to fight him, saying: "I would make a pizza out of him."

If I recall, there was a time when he was considered a respectable journalist. I don't know whether he just sold-out for money, or if he actually believes the crap he's trying to peddle.

His name used to be syonymous with extreme dufusism, especially after the Al Capone empty vault fiasco. For those too young to remember that event, in the mid 1980s, Geraldo ran a national special program on TV called the Mystery of Al Capone's Vault. He suggested that Al Capone's vault located in the Lexington Hotel in Chicago might contain missing money, diamonds, the bones of the gangster's enemies and other treasures. To the nationally televised event, he invited members of the IRS to whom Capone owed money, the County Medical Examiner to test the remains of any dead bodies, members of the U.S. Treasury Department, and other members of law enforcement. After a long lead up to the opening of the vault, during which time Geraldo demonstrated Thompson machine guns and other gangster paraphernalia, he finally had the thing unsealed. It contained two empty gin bottles and Geraldo filled in the time after that by singing the tune "Chicago".

And then after he became America's number one laughing stock, he was then reduced to hosting a Jerry Springer type of talk show, with such subjects as "Men in Lace Panties and the Women Who Love Them." The November 1988 front cover of Newsweek magazine had Geraldo on it, with the headline "Trash TV: From the Lurid to the Loud, Anything Goes." On one occasion, Geraldo had a bunch of Neo-Nazis on his show who started a Jerry Springer type of riot and a chair flew through the air hitting Geraldo in the face, breaking his nose. In the world of trash talk shows, Geraldo was even there a laughing stock. Jerry Springer never got hit with a chair.

Apparently, Geraldo misses the days when America was focused upon his as the number one dufus in the nation. I'm sure Keith Olbermann will be glad to start focusing again on Geraldo in earnest and add him to the cavalcade of the great dufuses of our time, up there with the Chimp and the DildoMan.

It was Geraldo that first took the daytime talk show to that ultra-trashy low, IIRC. Before Geraldo's first show it seems like they were all either daytime versions of the Tonight Show (i.e. Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett) or talk shows like Phil Donohue, that varied in subject from the serious to the entertaining. I remember Phil Donohue talking about cross-dressing and wearing a dress on a show, for instance, but even then the show was informative and tolerant rather than exploitive and vulgar. He also had world leaders on for serious discussions (I remember he had this round table he always used...odd, how I can still see the set in my mind's eye!). Phil Donohue is one of the reasons I'm the liberal I am (LOL)...growing up watching his show every day for years! I wonder how many others of my age he shaped the same way?

He said he didn't have any idea why Geraldo called him a "midget"--"I'm seven inches taller than he is!" He added "I'm not saying Geraldo is old, but he was on TV when I was a kid!"

Dan joked with him about how now KO's made enemies with Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Geraldo. Keith said "Well, if I had to fight Rush, you get him on his back, it's over." He said if he had to fight with Geraldo, he could win simply by sitting on him. Bill O'Reilly is his height, "so it would be a fair fight."
