My vow: no matter how much anyone insults me, I will never use "Ignore"...
and will only use "block" if being blocked.

Who else is with me?

Hell, we all love a good flame fight anyway, right? :-)

I do hide threads from time to time, simply because sometimes a single topic spills over into say, 25 threads (one example comes to mind ...). But I don't "ignore" anybody.

39. It's only censoring by you, though--like hanging the phone up on someone
If you start the thread, you can stop the person from replying to it (and they could start their own to respond to it), but if you are just contributing to a thread, you can only stop the person from replying to YOU. They can't crap on your subthread, but they can respond via a subthread of their own....at least that is how I understand it to work.

20. I have used block 5 times in as many years
Four of them are no longer with us, may they rest in peace.

I have used it only when someone is going out of his way to be offensive and it's happened more than once.

It's much better than getting into a pissing match. If he's demonstrated an inability to keep it civil, he's gone and I manage to stay within the rules.

I should probably use it more often, though.

22. Why do people act like this is some kind of virtue?
I find that bizarre. Use the feature if it works for you; don't use it if it doesn't. I don't think either mode is superior to the other.

I don't think I'm childish or a bad person for using the feature. I'm just happy we now have the option to ignore only replies and still be able to see threads and get PMs from those people. I often put people on ignore after they post the same screeching rant a dozen times in a row, but it's not that I don't want to hear anything they have to say ever, or promote personal animosity between us. It's kinda like how I don't watch MSM, listen to * speak, or read FR, but I'm still interested when others talk about what they say on occasion. I've heard it enough times myself to know that it just gets me in a lather for no reason, and for my own sanity, I have to filter it out.

48. My sentiments exactly
Sometimes you can go down the same path a zillion times (or see others do it for you) and realize its pretty pointless.
It has nothing to do with disliking differing opinions-I just don't like flame fests and pointless endless arguments with the same person over and over again .

23. Sorry, not with you. It's my own personal choice (Democrats are about choice).
Life is too short. I have no time for people who accuse me of being a freeper just because you disagree with them. The "ignore" function is one of the best features of any message group. Also, there have been good people who have been dragged into arguments by people whom they should just have ignored and have been banned as a result. Out of nearly 100,000 members here at DU I have a very, very tiny percent on my ignore list.

However, if someone gets insulting (not just disagreeing), it's mighty hard not to insult right back. That makes the conversation difficult for reasonable people.

I know some people find it helpful, and that's ok with me, but I mean it in the spirit of never giving up on discourse and the ideal of putting one's closest-held beliefs and ideas to the test of fire. I mean that I will never try to shield my beliefs and ideas from those who will disagree with them even to the point of issuing ad-hominems. I may not always get the last word, and I may get pwn3d from time to time, but my personal beliefs will be better thought-out and more rational because of it.

I will not take abuse and personal insults off of anyone and I don't know why I should when there is a way to at least not have to see them. I have used the ignore feature in the past and will continue to do whenever the need arises with no regrets whatsoever.

I'm not talking about simple disagreeing, that's fine with me. I'm talking about nasty personal insults which I have gotten with people actually saying I'm stupid cause my opinion is different from theirs. I'm very easy to get along with so when someone resorts to that I know there is no point in having anything to do with them.

EDIT: Clarification

Edited on Wed Jan-10-07 11:20 AM by alcibiades_mystery
ooooo...I was sooooo insulted....ooooo...I was soooooo personally troubled....oooo...I'm being "stalked" on the Internet message board by some MEAN person who keeps disagreeing with me....oooo...I'm not getting the self-validation I expected when I went into the world to encounter others!!! Where's my self-validation? What about my NEEDS? Where's my self-validation!?! I ignore anyone who doesn't validate my true and beautiful inner being! I am a BEAUTIFUL SOUL and I deserve the maximum of self-validation from all others! What about my BEAUTIFUL SOUL? What about ME?!?

Bah! Bunch of fucking new age wussy shite. Nobody with a shred of dignity could put up with that nonsense.

73. The whole thing is SILLY. I've been here from almost day one and have never used the "ignore"
feature and don't plan to. I'm with you. I will block if I'm blocked just to return the favor, but that's it. I really hate censorship like this. I think it will change DU and not for the good.:(

76. LOL funny
Nothing like tempting the Gods, eh? I don't have the stomach nor the persistance to try you on this one. I could take my stalker off ignore and try to get him/her to go after you instead. I think you might rue your vow at that point. Think before you vow.
