Not sure what you mean - are you limited in recs? I have no problem reccing multiple threads a day.

11. Wow! You're right! For some reason,
I thought I was allowed only one rec a day...

All this time, I've been so selective of what to reccommend.

I guess, even after about 500 posts, I'm still learning the ropes around here! Thanks for letting me know, wicket!

...And a BIG recommendation!!!

to the main post does that count as a rec?

Peace,

25. A reply to the originator, or to fellow responder,

does not count as a recommend. Beneath the original post there is an option to recommend which you click if you wish to recommend. That's my understanding, though I'm pretty new and still learning too.

44. Replying to a response to a main post (original post - OP) counts as a "kick"
A "rec" is when you click on the link at the bottom left corner of the OP that says "Recommend for Greatest"

29. I don't think it is a bad idea to be a bit selective about what you recommend.
I am always n a hurry, so I depend on the Greatest page to let me know what is most worth reading when I get a moment free. It is frustrating to open thread after thread to find only trivia or repetition of what is already in other threads ont he Greatest page.

Even worse is to find a thread whose subject is not only trivial, but whose innumerable posts are simply two- or hree-word "You go, girl!" kinds of responses. I don't mean that humorous threads are trivial, BTW. Some of them--especially the cartoon compilations--are terrific and telling. But a lot of threads get recommended not because they are really "Greatest page" material, but becuase someone wants to give someone else a pat on the head, for whatever reason.

Giving everyone a blue ribbon just undermines the value of blue ribbons.

31. Greatest page is invaluable if you are like me.......
...... which is, employed in an outdoor job with no 'puter nearby for most of the day!

The one drawback to The Greatest Page: replying there can be to a nearly empty room. Seems most DU'ers have moved on by the time something hits TGP.

40. That is precisely what I am talking about--that a lot of us use the
Greatest page to keep up when we need to use our short free time spans wisely. When I go to the Greatest page, I want to see substance, not horsing around or "You go, girl!" stuff. That's why I responded that using one's recommendations selectively is a good thing, not a bad thing, since our (WELCOME, NEWBIE!) new member was feeling a bit embarrassed about having thought he was only allowed one rec, so he had been using it very carefully.

71. And what you just said clarifies a confusing part of life at DU for me!
On all these threads complaining about bad manners, triviality and conspiracies I have been posting "what did I miss?" and "I haven't seen that" etc.

DUH! I haven't seen all that because I am a Greatest Page User due to my lack of time! It's all filtered and "time-tested" on the G Page. Du in it's Sunday best.

Thanks, tBlue. now I get it. :hi:

I used to rec everything I read. But then I realized that I was only reducing the "real/fake recommend ratio", which determines the actual importance of 'recommends' to said posts.

Understand now?

38. Great posturing but what legal authority do they have to do this?
I'm not poopooing the idea, but I'm thinking once that budget has been authorized in the past the money is long gone. I think all they really have is oversight to make sure the money is being spent as it was intended. Once Bush makes an official request for more money then Congress can tell him where to get stuffed, or put massive conditions on the spending or whatever - but I don't think they have the legal authority to take back a check they already wrote do they??

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

52. I hear there will be a supplemental funding request cominig up next month
Congress has every legal right to deny it. Bush Co hasnt been properly budgetting for the war in order to keep the deficit #s confusing and lower. Hence the supplemental requests.

Congress also can just approve enough for 1 month and have them come back again and again and again.

Unless Bush goes and tries to find funding elsewhere like what happened in Iran Contra except on a larger scale.

49. Here it is on the newswire! Cutting off money could end U.S. involvement in Iraq
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 04:30 PM by Tom Joad
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/special_packages/iraq/16436887.htm

en. Russ Feingold said Thursday that he will try to use Congress' control over the purse strings to end U.S. involvement in the war in Iraq.

Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat, made the comments at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing.

"I have consistently called for the redeployment of our military from Iraq, but now Congress must use its main power - the power of the purse - to put an end to our involvement in this disastrous war," he said at the hearing.

In an interview, Feingold added, "I'll be working on a proposal with other members as we go through these hearings in the next couple of weeks, figuring out the best way to go about using the power of the purse to make sure that this redeployment occurs."

________________________________

If the Dems abandon the troops to Bush's whims, and refuse to back this common sense proposal, they are in deep sh**. Many americans will become just too disillusioned to vote or participate in the process.

In other words, this is a make or break issue for the Democratic Party, and we should expect our leaders to unite around this.

70. I hope like hell the Dem's
Neuter Bush's war,(there are TONS of people here in america who need that money TO survive..) and I hope Bush is not only impeached but found guilty(there is plenty of evidence of his crimes if one dares to LOOK) and is hung for treason and all his neocon cabal also hung with him until they are all dead. Give Bush the Saddam treatment, Put him in a cage on TV and let him be treated like the traitorous scumbag he is, As for Hanging, until dead That's what the CONSTITUTION recommends to be done to TYRANTS and BUSH and his cohorts are TYRANTS!!
