1. He voted against it in 2001, why wouldn't he again now?

Repubs want it not to pass so they can blame the Democrats for it not passing.

Dems want it to pass so they don't get blamed for it not passing.

Feingold knows that the PA is a horrible law that strips away our liberties and doesn't think it should even be extended at all. So he voted no. It was the right vote.

The other Dems don't want to take a too strong stance against the PA becuase they THINK it would make them look weak on national security.

10. Okay, I'm confused
Maybe I misread my morning paper.

Repubs want it not to pass because they think the Pat Act should be made permanent AS IS.

Dems want the extension to pass because they want the Pat Act fixed re: civil liberties before it is voted on again. I do believe they would also prefer it had another sunset clause, which only makes sense. Use it for a while, re-evaluate, alter, then vote.

So if Feingold voted no, I don't get it. He said he had no problem with an extension I thought, as long as the time was used to fix the thing.

9. In my local Wisconsin newspaper there was a story
saying he doesn't mind a few month extension, to iron out the problems he sees with the Patriot Act. During his Senate campaign, he said that he didn't want to get rid of it, just fix it. So extending time in order to fix it is not a problem.

Making it permanent as it is now IS the problem.

And my Congressman, Sensenbrenner, keeps pushing for it to be made permanent as is, saying it hasn't been used to violate anyone's civil rights, and that we need it to fight terrorism.

I'm working on changing that "my Congressman" bit. Until then, my profoundest apologies for the conduct of the little pud.

3. Perfect time for a filibuster, if you ask me...
They are afraid we'll be attacked again and they will be blamed and then they will be in the minority....Oh...they're already in the minority...

11. Feingold the sole vote against the extension
The Senate voted 95-1 Thursday night to extend the current law unchanged through March 10 and give negotiators more time to reach a deal. Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., a longtime opponent of the Patriot Act, cast the sole vote against the extension. The House passed it Wednesday.
