Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA) Introduces Bill to Force Withdrawal from Iraq!!!
I heard this on the Peter B. Collins Show this afternoon and it seems to be true!

From Farr's website:

For Immediate Release
January 11, 2007

FARR INTRODUCES BILL TO FORCE WITHDRAWAL FROM IRAQ

Washington, D.C. – Following the president’s speech announcing his intention to escalate our involvement in Iraq, Congressman Sam Farr (CA-17) today introduced legislation to repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Public Law 107–243) and to require the withdrawal of our armed forces from Iraq.

“The president’s call last night to escalate the Iraq war flies in the face of the voters who clearly called for a change in our Iraq policy last November. I have long opposed the Administration’s war in Iraq and today I am introducing a bill to repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq and force the president withdraw our troops from Iraq. Too many troops have died, too many have been wounded, and Iraq has descended into a violent civil war. Our men and women in uniform have served valiantly, but the solution to the crisis in Iraq is political and will not be reached by keeping our troops in harm’s way,” said Farr.

Farr’s legislation simply reads:

SECTION 1. REPEAL OF PUBLIC LAW 107–243.
The Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Public Law 107–243; 50 U.S.C.1541 note) is hereby repealed.

SEC. 2. WITHDRAWAL OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES FROM IRAQ.
The President of the United States shall provide for the withdrawal of units and members of the United States Armed Forces deployed in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in a safe and orderly manner.

“The longer this war drags on, the clearer it becomes that it is the wrong war at the wrong time for the wrong reasons. Trying to make up for the fact that the Administration insisted on going into Iraq with too few troops more than three years ago by escalating our involvement now is not a ‘new strategy.’ There is a way forward, but that way is through withdrawing, not sending more troops,” added Farr.

3. I think too many Dems are hedging their bets for this to pass
And even if it did, it would be vetoed. But, it may be just as important to force Bush to veto it.

In practical terms, cutting funding may prove more fruitful.

7. Maybe having something more extreme on the table will help Dems
vote for cutting funding, since it's not the most drastic proposal.

I think there are various possibilities of what could happen with this.

Are you certain this would have to be signed by the pResident?

I'm looking forward to analyses of this proposal, and also to finding out what support it has (cosponsors, etc.).

14. On second thought, you're spot on
I think it was an Abbie Hoffman quote that said it best. It was something along the lines of his purpose not being to convert the country to the far left, but in being so extreme to make what he actually believed seem moderate.

15. That's a great quote--Abbie was so right on!
Just think of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and the Black Panthers. All working together got more changes than just the more moderate alone.

Oh yeah... I keep forgetting, we "fringe lefties" are ruining the party and the country.

16. Remember when the MSM was mainstream?
Now it's the right wing fringe media.

And that's largely thanks to those wacky progressive bloggers.

26. Right now (1pm Friday, Jan 12th) it has no co-sponsors. I just called my
reps office and asked that he co-sponsor it. I think we should all do that and request a response to our requests and then post them here on DU. We must put the pressure on and keep it on. They need to know we mean business.

Peace,
freefall

5. This absolutely the perfect thing to do...
because it can't be twisted easily in order to make us look bad. No one can BS and say we'd be taking away the bullets of the troops on the ground Iraq. If it passes, the President would still have the power to sign it or veto it, but at least the Congress would do all that it can to end the war.

6. Sam Farr is my rep! And...
he's a true patriot. I've walked in the 4th of July parade here with him, the 4th of July is his birthday!

He's such a great Rep, everyone loves him here. He manages to get a lot done locally but also doesn't lose sight of the national issues.

I feel very lucky to have him as our Rep. I live in La Selva Beach. Done a little walking in the "Shortest" myself as an Aptos Lioness. Great parade. Every year it gets bigger and bigger...

I'm in Seascape. Spend a lot of time in La Selva in the summer, when my son does Jr. Lifeguards at Manresa...

Was just in the LSB Surf Shop the other day, so cute! Of course you have your own little 4th of July parade there; I went to it once, it was so sweet, kids and dogs mostly.

Yes, Sam is the best.

25. This is great news. I just called my Congressman's office
and requested that he co-sponsor the bill. I also requested that he notify me of his response. When I get the response I will post it.

With this bill there is a ray of hope. We finally have a way to get our representatives to stand up for what they say they believe in. Thank you Representative Farr!

Peace,

freefall

That way we can be more educated when we call our reps. I expect to start a new thread aimed toward getting people to call their reps, hopefully later today.
