Happy Birthday Rush Limbaugh...and...Herman Goering??
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 09:52 AM by maxrandb
Why am I not surprised that these two share the same birthday? Although I think Rush looks more like Goering, he acts more like Goebbels. Not only do Rush and one of the most hated men in history share a birthday, they also share a belief in the stupidity and easy manipulation of the masses. This quote could come from either one, but it's from Goering at the Nuremberg trials. (emphasis mine).

- "Why, of course people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece?

Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."-

5. Pacifism
How exactly is pacifism defined? Is it refusal to fight wars of aggression only? Or does it extend so far as to refusal to defend the country if it is being physically invaded? I've never understood the true nature of what pacifism really means.

6. A true pacifist will not fight for any reason
Me personally-I don't go looking for trouble but I will defend myself.

7. Pacifism
I'd have to say I can't agree with pacifism if it means not defending one's country against attack. It's one thing not to actively seek out a fight; it's another not to fight when it is necessary to defend the country.

I had a nephew (20 years old) tell me the other day that if Islamic militants invaded us tomorrow, he'd go to Canada. That shocked me. If the country is being attacked, we have to defend it.

8. I should have said I love being called those things
by chucklehead conservatives. I served 24 years in uniform. I can't say that I am a pacifist although I promote that we negotiate till the cows come home over indiscriminately lobbing bombs. My patriotism is beyond reproach and yet I was shouted at and cussed out and verbally dragged through the mud in late 2002 because I said I didn't think going to Iraq was a good idea. Not a pacifist notion, just common sense. At the time I thought we would be poking at a big ole hornet's nest and we'd be stung for years. Silly me. Interesting aside note. Those who chose to denounce my patriotism had a total of zero days in service to our nation.

10. Rebuttal
I always point out the R-wing heroes who never supported the war, e.g., Pat Buchanan and George Will.

11. I have had my patriotism questioned on several occasions...
but only by individuals that had never served in the armed forces. i find it fascinating, (and it ticks me off as well), that those who never served have the audacity to question someone else's patriotism. I never questioned the patriotism of those who have never served, but for some reason I was suspect because I said openly and publicly that bush is an idiot, and his war machinations in Iraq would fail miserably...for that, I was some kind of "traitor"...go figure.

As for Goering, it has to be said he served, he was an ace during WWI, actually, he was a hero in Germany, and that helped to push Hitler into the coveted spot he wanted.

In any case, My retort to those who call me names because they feel like it is the right thing to do, is, "if you want this war, join up and fight it. I'm sure that with all of that gusto and bravado you show, you could win this thing singlehanded." Not one of the blowhards has seen fit to take up the offer....they are cowards all, willing to send others to do the fighting they cannot do themselves...:grr: Limbaugh talks, but he never contemplated sacrificing anything for any kind of victory, he is a bag of hot methane.

12. I have to chuckle
at the memory of one 20-something really hot under the collar back in November 2002 about my objection to war in Iraq. He said I should join the Army and go to Iraq to prove my love of country (Are conservatives fake lunatics or what?) I showed him my retired ID Card chatted about my tour in a combat zone and asked him where he had served. He said he hasn't served (YET!) He left half his beer on the bar and left my watering hole with his tail tucked between his legs, never to be seen again.

9. AND it is Lee-Jackson Day in Virginia!!!
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 11:06 AM by underpants
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee-Jackson_Day

Lee-Jackson Day is a holiday celebrated in the U.S. state of Virginia for the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The original holiday, created in 1889, celebrated Lee's birthday. Jackson's name was added to the holiday in 1904. Lee-Jackson Day is currently observed on the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and results in the closing of state offices such as the DMV.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee-Jackson-King_Day

Lee-Jackson-King Day was a holiday celebrated in the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1984 to 2000.

Robert E. Lee's birthday (January 19, 1807) has been celebrated as a Virginia holiday since 1889. In 1904, the legislature added the birthday of Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson (January 21, 1824) to the holiday, and Lee-Jackson Day was born.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan approved an Act of Congress declaring January 15 to be a national holiday in honor of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Since 1978, Virginia had celebrated King's birthday in conjunction with New Year's Day. To align with the federal holiday, the Virginia legislature simply combined King's celebration with the existing Lee-Jackson holiday.

The incongruous nature of the holiday, which simultaneously celebrated the lives of Confederate generals and a civil rights icon, did not escape the notice of Virginia lawmakers. Legislators protested the holiday by waving pictures of Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee, and Martin Luther King, Jr. around the state capitol.

In 2000, Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore (NOW running for President :bounce: :eyes: )proposed splitting Lee-Jackson-King Day into two separate holidays, with Lee-Jackson Day to be celebrated the Friday before what would become Martin Luther King Day. The measure was approved and the two holidays are now celebrated separately.
