Sergeant in trouble for Playboy spread

Fri Jan 12, 5:42 AM ET

An Air Force staff sergeant who posed nude for Playboy magazine has been relieved of her duties while the military investigates, officials said Thursday.

In February's issue, hitting newsstands this week, Michelle Manhart is photographed in uniform yelling and holding weapons under the headline "Tough Love." The following pages show her partially clothed, wearing her dog tags while working out, as well as completely nude.

"This staff sergeant's alleged action does not meet the high standards we expect of our airmen, nor does it comply with the Air Force's core values of integrity, service before self, and excellence in all we do," Oscar Balladares, spokesman for Lackland Air Force Base, said in a statement.

Manhart told Playboy that she considers herself as standing up for her rights.

"Of what I did, nothing is wrong, so I didn't anticipate anything, of course," Manhart, 30, told The Associated Press. "I didn't do anything wrong, so I didn't think it would be a major issue."

Manhart, who is married with two children, joined the Air Force in 1994, spending time in Kuwait in 2002. She trains airmen at Lackland.

5. This really chaps my hide.
It reminds me of the recent Miss Amercia hoopla. Trump taking the crowns away from girls he deems unfit because of lewd behavior. Are you kidding me? Half the pageant is based on putting these women in bikinis to parade around like cattle. Fuckin' hypocrites.

Air Force's core values of integrity....You mean like the Tailhook scandal?

6. "does not meet the high standards we expect of our airmen"
I grew up near an AFB, and had several close friends and close relatives in the Air Force. I've seen the high standards they expect of their airmen. The strip clubs and bars surrounding that base were always full, and many of them you couldn't get in unless you were in the AF. Organized crime catered to gambling and prostitution almost exclusively because of that air base. All my drug-using buddies went to these clubs to buy their stuff, because the best stuff was sold by airmen. One of my buddies described line orgies, where all the airmen would line up to entertain one woman, in public. The number one way for married women to have an affair was to cruise the air base clubs and pick up a "man in uniform."

This crap about the "high moral expectations" of our troops is a bigger lie than Bush's WMDs crap. They want to improve the moral fiber of the Air Force? Go after the men, first, and drop this bullshit double standard. I used to laugh when people would complain about Clinton not living up to the moral expectations of officers in the military. No shit! His pathetic little sexual escapades looked like choir boy activity compared to the officers in our noble military.

No offense to anyone in the military. I have the utmost respect for anyone willing to risk their life for me, no matter their real excuse for joining. But this mythological crap about their upstanding morals should be blown out of the water. This woman isn't being punished for violating any moral code. She's being punished for exposing that moral code.

12. But they had the best NCO clubs in Nam.
:eyes: I could never get over the impression that many Air Farce personnel were just visitors in Nam ... tourists. There was an immense chasm just in speaking with many of them.

9. "the high standards we expect of our airmen"
Yes ... about 40,000' high ... dropping bombs on civilians and killing so many innocents that a platoon of Marines would be prosecuted for murder for doing less.

The Air Farce is often institutionally appalling to me ... a refuge for those without empathy - push-button, indiscriminate death from above.

18. A posterwoman for militarism-a lot of OUR young women have been
killed or terribly wounded in the Decider's war on terror. Innocent Iraqi civilian women and girls have been gang raped tortured and murdered by some of our troops and the Decider's mercenaries.

A lot of women have been sexually assualted and harassed at various US military bases including academies training our officers.

Militarism is a characteristic of empire, not democracy.

The historic spoils of war always include women and children.

Imo she is a product of her training (hence her viewpoint "nothing is wrong...") and has all the appeal of Lyndie England, Condoleezza Rice, Ann Coulter or Victoria Clarke politically and the socially programmed celebrity instincts of Courtney Love, Jennifer Lopez or Lil' Kim.

19. So, you think Playboy is responsible for the war in Iraq?
Oh, yeah. Pictures of consenting adults nude or having sex always go hand in hand with rape, violence, and warfare. :eyes:

I agree with her- there's absolutely nothing wrong with her posing nude if she chooses to.
