WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The keepers of the "Doomsday Clock" plan to move its hands forward next Wednesday to reflect what they call worsening nuclear and climate threats to the world.

The symbolic clock, maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, currently is set at seven minutes to midnight, with midnight marking global catastrophe.

The group did not say in which direction the hands would move. But in a news release previewing an event next Wednesday, they said the change was based on "worsening nuclear, climate threats" to the world.

"The major new step reflects growing concerns about a 'Second Nuclear Age' marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing 'launch-ready' status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks," the release reads.

The clock was last pushed forward by two minutes to seven minutes to midnight in 2002 amid concerns about the proliferation of nuclear, biological and other weapons and the threat of terrorism.

17. Yes, that would explain it...
I came of age when Maiden was HOT, so... <shrug>

They had some great anti-war, anti-establishment lyrics. One of the more thoughtful of the hair bands, in my opinion.

26. I never have...
Pretty much the only bands left that I've wanted to see and haven't are Priest, Maiden, and Rush. Oh, and Queensryche.

Going to see Bob Seger next month.

Only band I've seen more than once is Aerosmith.

Concerts are just so expensive. Usually my wife wins tickets, or we wait and see a "has-been" at the Emerald Queen casino. Got the chance to see both Joan Jett and Pat Benatar there on separate occasions.

27. i'm pretty much a hip(py)-hopper these days..
but I still get an urge every so often to crank up some Maiden, Priest, or Scorps.

My buddy saw both Joan Jett and Pat Benatar out at the Viejas Indian Rez and casino and couldn't rave enough about them.

14. two minutes to midnight..

from the Powerslave LP.

Kill for gain or shoot to maim
But we dont need a reason
The golden goose is on the loose
And never out of season
Some blackened pride still burns inside
This shell of bloody treason
Heres my gun for a barrel of fun
For the love of living death.

Chorus
The killers breed or the demons seed,
The glamour, the fortune, the pain,
Go to war again, blood is freedoms stain,
But don't you pray for my soul anymore.
2 minutes to midnight
The hands that threaten doom.
2 minutes to midnight
To kill the unborn in the womb.

The blind men shout let the creatures out
Well show the unbelievers
The napalm screams of human flames
Of a prime time belsen feast...yeah!
As the reasons for the carnage cut their meat and lick the gravy,
We oil the jaws of the war machine and feed it with our babies.

Chorus

The body bags and little rags of children torn in two
And the jellied brains of those who remain to put the finger right on you.
As the madmen play on words and make us all dance to their song,
To the tune of starving millions to make a better kind of gun.

Chorus

Midnight...all night...

16. Damn!
that is so perfect for our times. In an awful way. Who could imagine lyrics like that could be so fucking relevant today? I guess war is too profitable to ever end until we are all gone.

:(

18. They knew what it was all about...
Maiden hit their stride during the Reagan years. I understand Dickinson is a really good guy, and knows the score.

I always thought their lyrics showed that well enough.

All in all, a thoughtful, articulate band.

23. for real!
I've been listening to a LOT of my old fav punk LPs as well (DK, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat), and it amazes how germane that music is to these times.
