Ice storms, snow, floods, tornado wallop US killing 13

Freezing rain, snow, sleet, flash floods and at least one tornado walloped the United States this weekend, killing at least 13 people in accidents on slick roads as a massive storm front blanketed much of the country.

The storm was expected to continue through at least Tuesday.

Ten people died in Oklahoma where slippery highways caused more than 200 accidents, the Oklahoman newspaper reported.

(another report said most of Okla. was out of electricity)

A state of emergency was declared and the National Guard was called out in the midwestern state of Missouri declared after an ice storm knocked power out to more than 200,000 homes on a bitterly cold weekend.

-snip-

In Texas, the governor also call out the National Guard after more than six inches of rain cause flash flooding and dramatic high-water rescues.

-snip-

Record-breaking cold weather even hit California, which usually has mild temperatures throughout the year, with citrus farmers in the Central Valley and the southern part of the state using wind-machines to protect their fruit, the Los Angeles Times reported.

-snip-

Parts of Colorado got up to 18 inches of snow while up to three inches of sleet were reported in Illinois, Kansas and Missouri, Romano said. Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri got an inch or more of freezing rain.

The storm is gathering moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and cold air from the Arctic, Romano said. It is expected to hit the east coast on Tuesday.

1. Does anyone still doubt global warming is real?
We can't afford not to take action now.

2. i don't doubt it is real, but its tough to attribute
a specific weather event to it. we've had winter storms before, hurricanes before. its even snowed in seattle before.

i have bad news: dick cheney is president for 2 more years, so not a goddamn thing is going to happen until his ass is gone.

and though we are the worst offenders, we're by no means the only offenders (china). the world is going to be very crabby when it goes on an energy diet. starvation rations will do that.

5. Watch "An Inconvenient Truth."

We aren't stuck with anyone. Our forefathers wisely designed the system with the tools necessary to prevent tyrants or to remove them if they managed to get into office. We simply have to demand it of our elected representatives.

Doing nothing about global warming is not an option, and the way to lead is not to avoid doing your duty because someone else isn't.

6. i would enjoy a double impeachment
who wouldn't?

but i have little to no faith left in the democratic party, our corporate citizens, or the MSM. i think we live in a fascist state. even if bush/cheney are removed & pelosi installed, Power in this country will not let our long term future affect their short term profit. it is the nature of our economy.

only a crisis will change our approach.

9. I'm worried about all of Northern Europe.
Much of it will be underwater in our lifetime if we don't stop the glaciers from melting at their current rate.

12. These things have been going on all my life and are not unusual
I believe that man's contribution to the FACT that the globe is warming is significant and will cause problems and IS causing problems.

Attributing the normal stormy weather we are experiencing today to global warming, is, in my humble opinion, not helpful to the cause. Those in their 50's, like me, who hear that, consider it to be apocryphal and politically motivated, rather than motivated by science and fact. Because we've seen weather like this and much worse since we were children.

We are making progress in convincing people this warming is real and that man's contribution to it can be slowed significantly. We are convincing more people that we have to make changes or we are going to have global problems unprecedented in human history.

Sorry for the rant. My two cents.

14. Never apologize for politely voicing your opinion.
However, I disagree that talking about the weather today as caused by global warming is not helpful to the cause. Everything that gets it exposure is helpful, and you are there to explain things to your generation in a way that they understand. We need to all be talking about this, whatever it takes, so that the next step is to do something about it, because we need to do something about it now.

I urge everyone to see "An Inconvenient Truth." Here's the website:

4. The jetstream can bite me
I used to enjoy the winters in Denver because it would snow one day and melt the next, but this year it's just annoying. I'm thinking this snow cover will linger until the end of March. The endless series of sub-zero degree nights aren't helping at all. I haven't even seen grass for about a month.

I guess I shouldn't complain because I still have heat.

11. Meanwhile, people in Moscow are depressed because of NO SNOW
and warm weather...their world is gritty and gray, and the kids want to go skating (but there's no ice to skate on) and skiing. Heard this on NPR this morning.

The lake I live near just this week finally froze over -- people used to ice-fish here right after Thanksgiving.

15. we haven't had any sledding yet
no snow!

2-3 years ago I took my kid sledding on MLK day - it was 20 degress out. I think there are seasonal adjustments to the jetstream, etc, but this winter has been the weirdest yet.
