Finding a solution in Iraq
Why would anyone think the government in Iraq would step-up to the plate and end the sectarian violence? The Shiite leadership knows that if they hold out, eventually the US will fall back. They know if they do what we want, the result will be sharing with the Sunni minority but if we leave they can scoop the pot and they can finally have revenge. They will oppress and kill until the Sunnis move out. We overthrew our supposed Sunni friends in Iraq, and installed a Shiite majority “democracy” that remembers many decades of oppression at the hands of us and our ally Saddam. This new government is favorable to Iran and the old was favorable to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Arabian government is a minority that suppresses a radical majority in that country. This group of fundamentalists really doesn't like the US and want us out of the area. They are the creators of Bin Laden and the radical movement that is spreading terrorism throughout the world, they are the ones we should be perusing in our “war on terrorism”. Jordan and Syria are also lining up on opposite sides and no doubt will add their weight to the explosive mix before too long. They can only stay clandestine and behind the scenes for so long until they must formally take sides. Iran holds all the cards in this hand and we have none. The government of Iraq is allying with Iran and Syria while Jordan will go with the Saudi royal family, none of which are on the US team.

The chain of events that was unleashed when this country invaded Iraq is tumbling down hill with greater and greater speed. Events that can not be controlled by our meager forces, events that will soon overwhelm us must be address soon. We have opened a can and the lid can not be put back on. How we can possibly separate these warring factions? Do we overthrow again, the US installed government of Iraq? Is creating a federation of people that would rather kill each other than talk a possible solution? The regional sectarian militias are the people of Iraq, they are the people that control that country. We can not back one group against all others. The government we installed is not even favorable to us, in fact they would like to see us go.

The solution to this seething vat of violence can only be found in diplomacy and separating the area into autonomous regions that fall along strict sectarian lines. Only diplomacy can bring peace to the area, this will never be solved by American intervention and warfare. In fact America is one of the major factors in the high level of violence and we should leave as soon as possible. We need to turn this over to the UN for a diplomatic and peace keeping solutions. The people are already moving to areas that provide safe haven for their particular religious or ethnic persuasion. We must abandon our thoughts of a federalist democracy and give up forcing the notion that people will come together at the point of a gun. No federation is possible unless all parties come to it willingly to achieve benefits. Until all parties are ready to work together to achieve something bigger, all that can be hoped for is a separation and cessation of fighting. This will be no easy matter and can only be achieved through diplomacy with all parties and counties in the region.
