Poll question: If we moved the capitol of the United States, where should we put it?
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 05:16 PM by yurbud
I just read in another post that DC is at sea level, so with global warming, we'll have to move it anyway.

We can build a dike around DC to protect the tourist attractions, but it wouldn't be smart to have a capital that can be drowned with one strategically placed barge full of dynamite.

2. Philly doesn't fit on your list.
It's not part of New England, and was the original US Capitol during the Continental Congress years.

I say, if we move it at all, move it back to Philly where it used to be.

51. This would be good!
It would serve as a reminder of what the nation was founded upon.

The Capitol building should be right across from Independence Hall

6. Phoenix, Arizona!
Why? The roads are laid out well. People actually planned the traffic patterns before they built homes. Go figure?

It's beautiful weather in the fall and spring. In the summer, try to remind yourself that it's a dry heat. ;)

Columbus would have been the new capitol of the North if the South would have won the civil war. It would have been called Columbiana.

23. Yeah you right! Y'all come down, we've got plenty of room,
thanks to your unbelievable incompetence and arrogance! Now you get to experience the results firsthand!

Think about it: a relatively central location, definite need for all those fat Federal paychecks, and the right atmosphere for everything from high-level lobbying to big-time demos (those of you going to DC on 1/27 will soon wish that this had already happened!) Those Mardi Gras videos would be, like we'd say, for lagniappe ("a little something extra"). (If only we could arrange for Clinton to serve another term... )

If I used Photoshop, I'd be looking to superimpose the Capitol and White House over the Lower Ninth Ward...

The Mason-Dixon line has been moving southwards since 1776. By the time of the Civil War, it was roughly at the latitude of Baltimore. By the 1950s, it was roughly at the latitude of Bethesda, MD. By the 1970s, it was south of Dupont Circle. It is now roughly at the latitude of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Maryland (except for self-described Southern Maryland, south of the Bridge) now considers itself proudly northern. Unlike, say, Kentucky.

That said, I have southern relatives and if we're going to have a Southern capital, it should be PROUDLY southern. Biloxi, maybe?

I went strictly on the fact that the Liberty Bell was hidden in Allentown. Since Philly was already suggested, and Washington will be underwater, I figured Allentown with it's higher elevation would work. You can bet any redevelopment would de-armpit the area.
