I assume Dems wouldn't mind if republicans wanted bush impeached.
And I assume they wouldn't stop the republicans should they decide to do so, but who knows?

This scenario could actually occur, far fetched as it sounds, and I would certainly hope that Democrats AND republicans could join hand in hand and walk down the path to removing bush and cheney et al.

This could be the only way to get impeachment back ON the table.

1. Are you kidding?
We'd be dancing in the streets.

I don't care who gets rid of him. If it's his own party, though, it will be just that much sweeter.

2. I think if the Dems get enough demands for impeachment, they will
realize they MUST put it back on the table.

The telephone of every Democratic Congress person should be ringing off the hook with constituents demanding Bush/Cheney be investigated immediately. Their offices should be FLOODED with letters demanding action to stop Bush/Cheney.

We have been lied to. Taken advantage of. Our Constitution has been abused. The Democrats are REQUIRED to look into these actions, and proceed as the facts indicate they must. But they must realize they will lose what was given to them in November if they don't do what the American people want. And it's pretty clear to me what most of us want at this point in time.

3. A motivating factor for republicans getting on board of the impeachment
train would be * being the proverbial weight tied to their leg for 2008 for the House, Congress, and the White House.

5. Yes, and I think they already learned that lesson in November.
The Republicans realize that after the disasters they have allowed to happen under BushCo, thier chances of regaining power and/or the WH in '08 are very, very slim -- but with Bush still tied around their necks, their chances go down to non-existent.

If they were to do the politically smart thing, they'd take Bush down themselves -- either through impeachment or forcing a resignation -- and attempt to spin that into political hay leading up to '08, by saying that they had the courage to clean their own house.

IMHO, that won't hold much water with most fed-up voters, but it might come down to being their ONLY shot ...

10. It WOULD be good fun to see a whole lotta republicans support
a move to impeach, leaving behind the faithful lapdog, "Independent" Joe Lieberman to vote against it.

34. That's why a writer at "American Conservative" endorsed Kerry in '04
Said basically that Bush fucked things up so badly (as of 2004) that another 4 years of Bush could destroy the conservative movement for at least a generation... the writer thought that the best Kerry (or anybody) could do was to work their ass off to hopefully be treading water by 2008, leaving Kerry very vulnerable in 2008...

6. Absolutely not
Impeaching a president is supposed to be difficult. We willl need at least a few GOP votes; the more, the better.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

13. Now there's a visual. These guys walking hand and hand, down the path...

just struck me funny, you know, it's that time of afternoon when the old blood sugar gets low and one needs a Snickers.

Getting the Republican vote on Impeachment is the ONLY way to get this gang of thugs removed. They can have 10 zillion hearings, 5,000 hours of debate, resolutiosn out the ying yang. But the bottom line is, we need Repub votes.

It's the nixon effect, tricky dick didn't want to be impeached, so he resigned, after a few meetings with his own people.

14. I'd rather not give that party an avenue to redeem themselves.
Had they practiced oversight, we'd not be in this terrible mess. We need to demonstrate via the investigative/oversight process that REPUBLICANS PERIOD are corrupt, inept and unfit to run this nation.

is if Republicans lead the impeachment effort and spineless Dems come across as wishy-washy accomodationists. We would never be able to overcome that embarassment.

20. Most Would Mind - But They'll Do It
Most seem far more interested in maintaining power than in correctly governing the country - e.g., their passive position on the Iraq War, warrantless wiretapping, torture, and so forth. They like an insane Rethug at the helm - makes even the evilest thing they do look OK. However, when the Rethugs start the process (which I think they will), going along will be better than not going along for the 'Democrats'.

...would retake the moral, constitutional high ground. Then coast into the WH and congressioal majorities in 2008.

Hopefully, they're not that smart.

"President Cheney" is not an improvement, especially if he picks McCain as his VP, which would only set him up perfectly for his own run at the presidency.

29. Now? Zero
Don't forget, we also have to get the two Nelsons, Landrieu, Pryor, Lincoln, Dorgan, Conrad, etc. The comment of Voinovich was telling, he "bought into Bush's dream" on Iraq meaning too many of these people still believe Iraq was about freedom and democracy. :eyes: I don't know how they can keep convincing themselves Bush 'means well', but they do. The Senate has a ways to go on impeachment.

30. Dems kiss their political future goodbye if Repubs call for impeachment first.
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 02:40 PM by pat_k
. . .But their fear of smear blinds them to reality -- and duty.

By their silence they confirm the perception that they are wimps.

As Clinton pointed out, "Americans will pick strong and wrong over weak and right".

And, Strong and Right is unbeatable.

If the Dems think they can sit on their hands and allow the Republicans to show the strength and principle required to fight for impeachment, they should start packing right now.

31. Then what has to happen is this...
Two congressmen, one from each party, should publicly state they will co-sponsor the motion, and then call a press conference in which they say they're undecided about which of the two will make the actual motion. At that point, they "decide" they'll flip a coin, and whoever calls it will make the motion, whle the other will second it.

That way, no party will get more credit than the other, because hey, the coin could have fallen the other way, couldn't it? 'Twas simple fate.

Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 03:06 PM by pat_k
Doesn't matter who acts first. The imperative to impeach trumps all "strategery"

If this Democratic caucus fails us, we take up the fight to mount primary challenges to replace each and every one of them with men and women who understand the meaning of an oath.

We cannot even begin to solve our common problems without a foundation. If the Repubs beat us to the punch, so be it. After impeachment, at least we are fighting on solid ground.
