Hillary's team has questions about Obama's Muslim background (disgusting)
Are the American people ready for an elected president who was educated in a Madrassa as a young boy and has not been forthcoming about his Muslim heritage?

This is the question Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s camp is asking about Sen. Barack Obama.

An investigation of Mr. Obama by political opponents within the Democratic Party has discovered that Mr. Obama was raised as a Muslim by his stepfather in Indonesia. Sources close to the background check, which has not yet been released, said Mr. Obama, 45, spent at least four years in a so-called Madrassa, or Muslim seminary, in Indonesia.

"He was a Muslim, but he concealed it," the source said. "His opponents within the Democrats hope this will become a major issue in the campaign."

When contacted by Insight, Mr. Obama’s press secretary said he would consult with “his boss” and call back. He did not.

Sources said the background check, conducted by researchers connected to Senator Clinton, disclosed details of Mr. Obama's Muslim past. The sources said the Clinton camp concluded the Illinois Democrat concealed his prior Muslim faith and education.

"The background investigation will provide major ammunition to his opponents," the source said. "The idea is to show Obama as deceptive."

In two best-selling autobiographies—"The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream" and "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance"—Mr. Obama, born in Honolulu where his parents met, mentions but does not expand on his Muslim background, alluding only to his attendance at a "predominantly Muslim school."

The sources said the young Obama was given the name Hussein by his Muslim father, which the Illinois Democrat rarely uses in public.

His father was black and came from Kenya. Mr. Obama’s mother, the daughter of a farmer, came from Wichita, Kansas. Mr. Obama's parents divorced when he was two years old. His father returned to Kenya.

Later, Mr. Obama's mother married an Indonesian student and the family moved to Jakarta. Mr. Obama returned to Hawaii when he was 10 to live with his maternal grandparents.

The sources said the background check concerned Mr. Obama's years in Jakarta. In Indonesia, the young Obama was enrolled in a Madrassa and was raised and educated as a Muslim. Although Indonesia is regarded as a moderate Muslim state, the U.S. intelligence community has determined that today most of these schools are financed by the Saudi Arabian government and they teach a Wahhabi doctrine that denies the rights of non-Muslims.

Although the background check has not confirmed that the specific Madrassa Mr. Obama attended was espousing Wahhabism, the sources said his Democratic opponents believe this to be the case—and are seeking to prove it. The sources said the opponents are searching for evidence that Mr. Obama is still a Muslim or has ties to Islam...

If this is true, it's disgusting and unacceptable. We should not tolerate fearmongering and the use of religious bigotry. If Hillary wants to race bait, she can join the Rethugs where they enjoy this sort of thing.

50. I haven't heard Hillary mention it.
Every campaign does opposition research on opponents. It's up to the candidate and their staff to decide to use it or not.

Rule of thumb for candidates. If you have a skeleton or anything else in your closet, your opponent already knows it too. Best to get out in front of it.

39. Pretty typical right-wing "divide and conquer" tactics, actually...
They've been doing this since Nixon's CREEP, if not before -- issue a fake news story, allegedly from one Democratic candidate, smearing another Democratic candidate, but in such a despicable way as to discredit both Democrats.

And hasn't McCain recently hired a whole bunch of the most notorious sleazy Republican operatives to work on his campaign?

107. I think you are right...
It started as a right wing email attack that my very catholic and very republican mother-in-law sent me last week:

Subject: Be Alert of a probable candidate for us Presidency

Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was
born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black Muslim from
Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white atheist from Wichita, Kansas.
Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii.
When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father
returned to Kenya. His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a radical Muslim from
Indonesia.
When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama
attended a Muslim school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a Catholic
school.
Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is
quick to point out that, "He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended
Catholic school."
Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that
Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was
temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after
the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education.
Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham,
introduced his stepson to Islam. Osama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in
Jakarta. Wahabism is the radical teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who
are now waging Jihad against the western world.
Since it is politically expedient to be a Christian when seeking
major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the
United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim
background.
Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential
candidacy.

* Notice the Osama typo! That article and this email sound like they come from the same source.

Oh and yea, I can't stand my m-i-l!

7. This is appalling prejudice from Sen. Clinton - unacceptable.
I received a very nasty email about Barack Obama that repeated this same sort of B.S., implying almost that he is a "closet terrorist."

If Hillary can't make it on her own qualifications, she ought to just give up. I sure would like to have a woman president, but don't think she's the one. Sure, she is smart and tough, but she lacks something in the ethical area. Too cutthroat and calculating for me.

Does it matter if it comes from Hillary's camp or the Rovian camp? Because, the end result is the same: scare the bejebus out of the American public so they won't vote for Obama.

That's what the point is: whether it came from Hillary's people or the Republican's, the damage is the same.

...that this sort of right-wing technique not only scares voters from supporting Obama, but also gets lots of Democrats disgusted with Hillary, so that they won't support her, either.

As to Obama and rumors of Muslim upbringing -- considering his background (and, especially, his name), he better be expecting all sorts of scurrilous attacks (whether from other Democrats or -- far more likely -- from Republicans, either outright or posing as Democrats) and be ready to counter them. If he can't handle stuff like this, he has no chance in a national election, and we're better off knowing that now, rather than after he becomes the nominee and can get SwiftBoated like Kerry. I look forward to watching how he deals with such charges now.

at the time Obama was in Indonesia, Wahhabism was not really there--folks I know who lived there in the 80s talked about meeting Sufis and not having any hassle with fundamentalists--and they were American Sufis who were working over there.

I'm thinking it would be nice if we could all sit down and watch "Little Mosque on the Prairie", which I hear is a funny look at Muslims in America--and shows that they don't have horns or eat babies!

The right's specialty. Get something slimy out there, then when it turns out to be false, oh, too bad, can't turn back the clock.

There is no good reason to believe this story until it is confirmed by someone willing to use his/her own name.

115. When you attack someone for something they did as a child..when they
had no say..it is the same as attacking them on falsehoods. It is an attack. Obama had no control over that and it says nothing about his character as a child. For sure torturing small creatures may tell us something about Bush's character..but where I child goes to school? Come on. What were the choices Obama has made as an adult? That is reasonable line to question. Not where he went to school when he was 6.

if he makes it to the general election. We don't know who these "sources" are, or how reliable, but it doesn't really matter. The fact is, he attended a Muslim school and Repubs will try to smear him with that.

Might as well get it over with now, so it's old news by the time the election rolls around.

33. Those who hate Hillary
will grow red in the face and throw an unending stream of baseless insults against her while those who love Hillary will question the sources cited and pooh-pooh the whole thing. Fact of the matter is, having worked with her (and that doesn't necessarily mean I like her or want her for President, mind you), I doubt very much her "team" would be this flat-footed, amateurish and shrill. I also doubt anything written by the World Tribune is honest or accurate.

But this is Politics and this is, unfortunately, how DU tends to work most of the time. Oh well.

democrats and because we have seen such hard times at the hands of repukes, it is not surprising that those who don't obviously come out strong from the get-go against certain policies are going to be persecuted by those of us who are afraid of more of the same. I think it is important to realize that. I'm not arguing with you. I'm just pointing this out.

54. More about the World Tribune....
http://www.newyorker.com/talk/content/articles/030908ta_talk_mcgrath

"Aficionados of the Drudge Report may have noticed several striking headlines recently linking to stories from the World Tribune, an enterprise with a title as grand and ambitious as it is unfamiliar. One such story last week began, “U.S. intelligence suspects Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction have finally been located.”

"Not everyone ignored it: Rush Limbaugh, for instance. “There’s a piece in the World Tribune today—one of the papers in the United Kingdom—exactly as theorized on this program early on,” he said on his radio show. “It’s unconfirmed, but it’s a story that many of the weapons of mass destruction are at present buried in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon.”

"In fact, the World Tribune is not published in the United Kingdom, nor is it, to be precise, a newspaper. It is a Web site produced, more or less as a hobby, in Falls Church, Virginia, and is dedicated to the notion, as its mission statement explains, that “there is a market for news of the world and not just news of the weird.” (Nonetheless, the site includes a prominent feature, Cosmic Tribune, with an extraterrestrial focus, and it links to a Mafia journal called Gang Land News.) Its editor and publisher, Robert Morton, is an assistant managing editor at the Washington Times and a former “corporate editor” for News World Communications, the Times’ owner and the publishing arm of the Unification Church, led by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon. (Morton and his wife, Choon Boon, are themselves followers of the Reverend Moon.) Among the World Tribune’s other recent half-ignored scoops are that Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for last month’s blackout and that a North Korean defector stressed, during a meeting in July with White House officials, the need for a preëmptive military strike against Kim Jong Il.

Morton said last week via e-mail that he founded the site as an experiment, back in 1998, while serving as a media fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution, a conservative think tank. “I didn’t expect World Tribune.com to last for more than a few months,” Morton wrote, but now, despite having no dedicated staff (“Everyone involved with World Tribune.com has a day job”), the site receives more than a million page views per month. And, unlike the Washington Times, which has lost at least a billion dollars in its twenty-one-year existence, World Tribune.com, in concert with the subscription-driven weekly intelligence briefing Geostrategy-Direct.com (a partner site), has paid for itself.

The secret of its success seems to involve well-placed informants (“Over the years I have developed an informal, international network of sources and writers I can trust,” Morton said) and an emphasis on immediacy. Although Morton said, “We emphasize newspaper standards to counter the half-baked, unfiltered content on some online sites,” World Tribune.com more fairly qualifies as something between a newspaper and a rumor-mongering blog. Call it “blews.” In this sense, it is part of a loose network of mostly conservative sites—WorldNetDaily, Dr. Koontz’s National Security Message Board, debka File (produced by a pair of Jerusalem-based journalists thought to have moles in Israeli intelligence)—whose dispatches sometimes serve as the journalistic equivalent of trial balloons: a story may not be based on knowable facts, but it nevertheless may occasionally turn out to be right. (Much of the time, of course, it more closely resembles a Bat Boy update in the Weekly World News.)

Possibly LeHane was hoping to build a relationship with this entity, figured they would be so glad to get the 'opposition research' that they would never tell where it came from. That's how it works, A LOT. This group decided to take them both down together and make a name for themselves that way.

So sure, your point of hurting both of them is likely correct. But did they lie about Hillary in the process?? We don't know.

The Clintons DO operate this way, btw.

Actually, "we" try to confirm info all the time.
However, "we" also analyze critically what we read here, not being content to accept something that's printed in any newspaper anywhere as gospel truth. So, talk about censorship if it makes you feel better, but don't be surprised when people question the already questionable source, smearing two Democrats without attribution of the smears. Nice little game if they can get away with it.

Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 07:34 PM by iverglas
then Obama was a victim of abuse as a child. Duh. Denying children a real education in favour of hateful brain-washing is abuse, just as it is when fundamentalist Christians do it in North America.

Of course, it seems that it was not true, since he was attending school in the 1960s and there is no reason to think there was any Saudi/Wahhabist influence in Indonesian schools at the time. The school was Muslim because the society was Muslim, one might think, if one were a rational sort of person.

Imagine an Indonesian Muslim child living in the US with his/her parents in the 1960s and going to public schools. And now imagine a Wahhabist Muslim in 2007 accusing that grown-up child of being a fundamentalist Christian ... because, after all, US public schools in the 1960s were pretty much Christian.

I'd have to say that it's Obama's "personal relationship with Christ" that would trouble me ... since voting for delusional folks wouldn't be my first choice.

edit: btw, I detest Hillary Clinton, not that what little old Canadian me thinks matters anyhow. ;)

123. This is bullshit but Obama better be prepared cause shit like this is right around the pike
as soon as Obama announces, black ops teams that have been working on his background for the past year will spring into action ready to defame.

Obama better be ready - this is what playing in the big time is like. He destroyed his Illinois Rethug opponent (the one before Keyes, Jack Ryan) by publishing his opponents' (supposedly sealed) divorce records that exposed kinky shit. Obama knows how to play hardball.

Let the games begin - the Dems are going to make sure they tear each other down and all the ugly shit is about to hit the brutality fan. Kerry redux - Swiftboat redux. I'm not slamming Hillary but she and her crew are ready to win, at all costs. It's the game. So whether this is true or not, it's indicative of hardball ahead.

125. What is the World Tribune?
Not saying that this is a fabrication, but I've never heard of it. There's all kinds of bullshit floating around on the Internets!
