Looking for info on Democrats killed in plane crashes
I thought there have been some threads here on this subject but my search came up empty. Anyone have any links to more information on how many Democrats have been killed in plane crashes - say in the last 20 years?

19. But then again, I heard this in the Charlie Rose show:
"Syriana" director Thomas Gaghan mentioned that ex-CIA agent Robert Baer told him never to fly in a small plane because they are too easy to take down. That really got me to thinking.

32. Disturbing...
That is a little bit troubling...

I mean, when you look at Paul Wellstone, what he stood for, and the way he could connect with people, he would be the go-to leader of the progressive movement if he hadn't died...

Worth thinking about...

18. I think you're wrong on the date - it took place just after JFK's murder
if I recall. I was just a kid at the time but I felt very strange about the crash occurring on the heels of his brother's death in Dallas. I think others in the plane were killed and Ted Kennedy miraculously survived.

14. he was supposed to be with Paul Wellstone on that plane
but because of some time and scheduling delays he wasn't able to go with him. remember, he was in Minnesota that day and one of the first to comment on the tragedy.

also note, before we even knew for sure whether Wellstone had died the Republicans in the white house and elsewhere were already on the phone asking about the legal issues concerning the election and how they could benefit if Wellstone did die or couldn't run for whatever reason anymore.

23. There was a far RW congressman....
"McDonald" or something close... from GA. , I believe, who was on the commercial plane shot down by either the Soviets or the Chinese during the Reagan or Carter era. It "strayed" over their territory... so we were told. Suspicion was the US Gov't was using it ( a commercial flight) to probe their ( the USSR's ) air defense.

29. Yes, in MS in 1986?
I don't remember the name. He was previously the country sheriff and had just won election in the district at the bottom of MS. He died in a plane crash right away, and a special election was called. The democrat, Gene Taylor, who had lost, was run by the Democrats and a guy named Anderson was put on the Republican ticket. Taylor won and is still the congressman for the district.

So you can add an R congressman to the list.

However, I don't believe that it was anything but a tragic accident. Nor do I think there was a conspiracy at work for JFK Jr, or for Wellstone.

It seems like it can be really easy to get kicked around here if you a) disagree with something everyone else agrees on, or b) don't know the details of everything that is going on...

Dunno, just an observation...

35. Here's one I remember. Democratic Missouri Senate candidates beware
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Litton

Jerry Lon Litton (May 12, 1937– August 3, 1976) was a Democratic U.S. Representative from Missouri.

Litton was born in Daviess County, Missouri. A rancher, he was national secretary of the Future Farmers of America (1956-1957). He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1961 with a B.S. in Journalism. Litton was elected to the U.S. House as a Democrat in 1972. He was considered a rising star in the Democratic Party until his tragic death in a private plane crash on August 3, 1976, the same day he won his party's nomination for the U.S. Senate.

After Litton, only two politicians have died during U.S. Senate campaigns: Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan in 2000 and Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone in 2002.

38. Perhaps Samantha Smith would fit that bill.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samantha_Smith

<Samantha Reed Smith (June 29, 1972 – August 25, 1985) was an American schoolgirl from Manchester, Maine who was called America's Youngest Ambassador in the United States and the Goodwill Ambassador in the Soviet Union during her lifetime. She became famous in these two countries and well-known worldwide after writing a letter to the Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Yuri Andropov during the Cold War and receiving a reply from Andropov which included a personal invitation to visit the Soviet Union, which Smith accepted. Assisted by extensive mass media attention in both countries, she participated in peacemaking activities in some other countries after her visit to the Soviet Union, wrote a book and co-starred in a television series before her death in an airplane crash.

The Cold War was profitable... she was thawing it at a rapid rate.

>Death and funeral
On a return flight from filming a segment for Lime Street in the summer of 1985, Smith's plane missed the runway of the Auburn, Maine airport by 200 yards and crashed, killing all aboard (six passengers and two crew), including Smith and her father. Many speculations regarding the cause of the accident circulated afterwards — some said it was organized by the CIA while others accused the KGB, arguing that Smith's growing popularity could affect some important political or military decisions in either country. An investigation was undertaken in the USA and the official report, which did not support these speculations, was made public. As stated in the report, the accident occurred at about 22:05 EDT, the ground impact point located 1.6 km south-west of Auburn airport, at 44°02?22?N, 70°17?30?W. The report goes on to say, "The relatively steep flight path angle and the attitude (the orientation of the aircraft relative to the horizon, direction of motion etc.) and speed of the airplane at ground impact precluded the occupants from surviving the accident." The main point of the report was that it was a dark and rainy night, the pilots were inexperienced, and an accidental, but not uncommon and not usually critical, ground radar failure occurred. The plane used for the fatal flight was a Bar Harbor Airlines Beechcraft 99.

>Samantha Smith was mourned by about 1,000 people at her funeral in Augusta, Maine, including Vladimir Kulagin of the Soviet Embassy in Washington, who read a personal message of condolence from Mikhail Gorbachev. However, no representative of the American government was present. She and her father were buried near Houlton where she was born.

NO member of the US Govt attended the funeral.
