Hell, just read any good non-US history book on fascism to see where we've been, where we now are, & where we're going.

6. Much as I deplore
the war in Iraq, your post is both one sided and over the top. Where are we raping their women? What American newspaper has published the offensive cartoons? And much as I sympathize with the anger over the mockery, the response (which I grant you was merely triggered by the cartoons) is out of control.

8. These exceptions noted are highlighted in every Arab paper
"We" have been accused and found guilty of all these charges even though they are the exceptions (I hope) in our troops behavior and our war tactics.

It is important that we know what the Arabs are told about us and how we are perceived.

13. This is widely posted:
"In its May 10-17 issue, the Newsweek said that yet-unreleased Abu Gharib abuse photos "include an American soldier having sex with a female Iraqi detainee and American soldiers watching Iraqis have sex with juveniles."

There are many accounts. It seems that the US mainstream corporate media may have scrubbed them - for the most part.

38. So, there is no doubt these pics are authentic?
Propaganda anyone? The cry of the invader is "Raping our Women" has been used in every god damn war! We NAzi forces were evacuating Belgium, one of their best weapons was to tell Belgian villages the godless Americans are going to rape them to death.

And check the source, Alot of Muslim websites have posted false pictures of what the American Crusaders have been doing to the poor penitent Muslims in Iraq.

It's also well documented that Saudi clerics and Imams routniely lie to Muslims worldwide concerning American atrocities to get muslims to cross into Iraq to fight.

In fact the lies of these Saudi Clerics are almost as bad as the Resident of America...

16. New York Sun publishes two of the cartoons
The American newspaper New York Sun publishes two of the cartoons - Feb. 2

per Wikipedia.

Plus they are obviously all over the web.

Also Michelle Malkin was saying the LATimes was going to run them - they may have thought better of it. She has been egging them on.

See:

IN SEARCH OF A BRAVE AMERICAN NEWSPAPER (UPDATED)
By Michelle Malkin · February 02, 2006 10:02 AM

-------------

This whole thing has been the neocons wet dream. I noticed where they were trying to encourage more people to create more cartoons of Mohammed. People who do that should know - that is just what the neocons want. That and lots of riots.

And the bombing of Iran.

26. Context is everything, Cali
It's the same dynamic one sees daily in the U.S. Racism is about power. Arabs have been under the jackboot of Western powers for over a century. If you're old enough to remember Popeye, think of how often Bluto was portrayed as an evil Arab. THAT was in the 50's (a time when the U.S. was busily overthrowing more potentially progressive governments). The hatred of Western values is rooted in the history and actions of those powers in the region.

U.S. troops are not only raping women. Children have been used as target practice. Abu Ghraib is just the tip of the iceberg. The HORROR of what they are doing DAILY will only become clear to you in retrospect, if at all, when your soldiers return to your streets in large numbers.

The "over the top" response was a bullseye. The intent is to manufacture consent for a wider genocide by framing the issue as a "clash of civilisations."

28. Absolutely, context is important
And there's no doubt that much of what you said its true, but it's not that simple, or black and white. It's rare that anything is. And I have a deep distrust of that paradigm of thought.

32. Please say more...
I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

What I see is that we're ALL being set-up; Westerners having their bigotry appealed to framed as a "free speech" issue, Arab fundies by clerics seeking to maintain influence and spearhead retribution... WHAT A MESS!

So I'm left asking, Who benefits? Where does the money trail lead?

34. Cui bono?
Indeed. But it's not all about money. Again, it's not that simple. It's as much about delusional visions of "the best of all possible worlds". It's about control.

I completely agree that westerners are having their bigotry appealed to under the guise of free speech, and sadly an awful lot of DUers are falling eagerly into the trap.

14. I just (re) posted this information earlier tonight
U.S. female soldiers being raped by U.S. troops. posted by Jara sang the other day:

http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/31584 /

Appalling new evidence reveals that female soldiers serving in Iraq made fatal decisions in their attempts to avoid rape.

In a startling revelation, the former commander of Abu Ghraib prison testified that Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, former senior US military commander in Iraq, gave orders to cover up the cause of death for some female American soldiers serving in Iraq.

Last week, Col. Janis Karpinski told a panel of judges at the Commission of Inquiry for Crimes against Humanity Committed by the Bush Administration in New York that several women had died of dehydration because they refused to drink liquids late in the day. They were afraid of being assaulted or even raped by male soldiers if they had to use the women's latrine after dark.

37. You're totally wrong because you're playing into the hands of fanatics.
Edited on Sun Feb-05-06 01:20 PM by Hoping4Change
Do you not realize that all fanatics to achieve their goals want to destroy the sense of the individual. For instance Hitler was able to do what he did because he successfully created the belief that Jews were not individuals and therefore not really human.

And not only did he destroy the sense that Jews were individuals but he was successful in making Germans believe that the German state and its goals was of ultimate importance and that individual Germans were there simply a means to an end. So if you want to standup against any tyranny, stand up as an individual and don't let anyone lump you in as part of a group.
