That $255 has been the same amount since I was a little girl, and I'm 62 now! Hell, most of the comments I've ever heard about it were to increase it, because it was initially designed to cover funeral expenses. The funds were deducted from paychecks under the promise that the money would be there should the need arise. Survivor benefits were part of that promise.
