Ha! Sweet little zinger on ESPN just now.
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 05:39 PM by WilliamPitt
I watch a show at 5pm called 'Around the Horn.' It's basically an argument contest between sports reporters. They just got onto the topic of Wayne Gretsky, the most famous NHL player, who has been snared up in an investigation of a million-dollar illegal gambling ring run by his assistant coach. Gretsky today denied he has ever bet on anything.

Woody Paige, one of the mainstays of this ESPN show, goes off and says, "Yeah, we've heard all this before. You know, I didn't take steroids, there were weapons of mass destruction, we've heard it all before."

Nice.

P.S., the winner of each day's show gets 30 seconds to rant about whatever he/she wants. Paige last year used his 30 seconds on one show to demand an end to the annual seal slaughter up north.

1. Stupid, stupid.
Sorry, those situations aren't analagous to Gretzky's.

Note, its spelled GRETZKY. How can you be liberal and be anti-hockey? Boooooo..

3. Um
The point: Paige threw the Iraq WMDs against the wall as an example of lying.

Nice to see on ESPN.

13. Woody's a local legend around here.
He's from Denver, and I liked his column when he wrote for the Post.

10. I'm liberal and anti-hockey...
I think the sport is brutal and violent.

I feel the same about boxing.

15. Well
Gretzky is the coach of our olympic hockey team and the media here is on this story like it could be the scandal of the century.

The Fed's went out of their way say that none of the parties involved bet on Hockey.

I can't see them saying it was football and basket ball exclusively if it included more.

Also Rick Tochet's partner in crime was a NJ state trooper so I think they know what was going on.

But you are right, there maybe much more. I guess my high school crush has me looking for the good news.

7. Good point, because...
...millions of sports fans, mostly guys, who watch ESPN, will get the meme that Bush is a liar, even though they don't follow politics much, if at all.

It's a great connection, lost on many here I'm afraid. I'm not a big sports fan, but I get the connection. This is just one way to get into the mainstream culture the notion that something is wrong. Every sports fan, no matter how casual, will understand.

12. And on ESPN2....
I think I read here on DU one reporter said about Gretzky's statement something to the effect of the world's greatest lies:
"Yeah, and I did not have sex with that woman, I'll respect you in the morning, and Iraq has WMDs."

14. I wasn't a big Woody Paige fan when he was with the Denver Post.
Imus had a good take on the Wayne Gretzky this morning, I hardly ever watch Imus, but it was great this morning.

17. Woody's an idiot
A loathsome wretch of human being. What's funny is he's usually the first to go on Around the Horn. Why? See my subject line.
