HELP--I need an Internet referral: |
|
Since many of you have more experience online than I do, can one of you recommend a liberal website on which I can ask any question, or talk about anything I wish to, without getting tombstoned?
Posters here have to walk on more-fragile-than eggshells, and I have many questions and perceptions I'd like to talk over with other liberals--and that's not possible here--I've tried that.
What's your best recommend?

What is the point of your abject unkindness? You back up my point entirely by becoming hysterical the first time I even MENTION such an issue as tombstoning.

I have never even spent one moment thinking about being tombstoned here. From the first time I found DU, I knew these people were of the same mindset as I am on so many issues. Now if I hadn't noticed that, then maybe I would be concerned about being tombstoned.
Others are telling you the same thing. If you are a liberal progressive, you will be welcomed here and you will love this website. If you aren't then maybe you are in the wrong place. If so, why waste your time and ours?
Every time the news gets 'hot', as it has this past week, we are invaded by all kinds of RW trolls. If you didn't realize that, then I apologize. If you do know that, then you can consider yourself 'discovered'.

Yes, I'm sure YOU did find the people here of the same mindset as you.
What happens to the people who aren't quite--or those who need questions answered before they can declare total solidarity? (And why is everyone here so afraid of that?)

...when someone is scrubbed, their posts are 'disappeared', so it's impossible to know which one has offended, or to have them for a record. Inquiries to the staff here as to why privileges have been revoked are ignored.
(Do you all not know this happens here? I'm sure I'll get thrown off here soon for just asking about this. Feel free to dial in my name and find out for sure--it'll back up EVERYTHING I'm saying.)

It never occured to me to put them into categories and mark one side 'okay-they're-liberal-questions' and the other 'not-to-be-asked-they are conservative questions'.
Sometimes, a question is just a question.

yes, there are diverse opinions, not all of which i agree with and I dont always agree with the moderators either and then there are the trolls. for me none of that is a problem.
If you want more unadulterated liberal fire perhaps the message boards for the Mike Malloy or Randi Rhodes shows would do.

|
The ones who HAVE had this experience aren't here to tell you their side of it because of the very action to which I refer.
If you have doubts, find another computer, register as another poster, and post the mildest moderate opinion that you can--or a question that may well be a rightwing point--but one that needs to have a liberal point of view added to adequately counter it, and provide balance.

7. Orca, You Aren't Gonna Find Better Than Here, Period. |
|
But you have to have a thick skin, especially while you are new. You can ask and discuss anything liberal you want here, but always run the risk of some posters blasting you. But fear not, you will find many to agree, enhance, discuss and give you incredible insight and reasoning as well. You have to take the good with the bad and hang on for the ride, it can get bumpy.
But you aren't gonna find a smarter, more caring, more well rounded and exciting community on the web than DU. Keep your mind open and don't be too quick to judge what you can or can't do here, or what this site is about. If you had a rough thread or two you have to suck it up and keep trying. Remember, thick skin, tolerance of others opinions, patience and respect. If you master those qualities you will have a long tenure here, and will quickly find it is the most addictive forum you could ever have the honor of being a part of.
Trust me. :)

30. No, Not At All What I Was Saying. |
|
What I'm saying is that just because you may piss off a 1000+ poster doesn't mean you would get thrown off. Lord knows I've pissed off enough of them myself but that's life. It is a big community, there will be disagreement but it doesn't mean god forbid if someone reacts strongly to you that you will be banned. That's ridiculous. What I was saying is that regardless of how people respond to your posts you just have to suck it up and forge ahead. As long as you follow the rules you would not get tombstoned but you would still need a thick skin to handle some of the exchanges here.
People get tombstoned for either being disruptors, freepers, or for consistently causing trouble and starting flame wars even after being given chances to tone their posts down. If you aren't doing any of these things than there is no reason for you to be concerned. Just don't go around starting flamewars all the time, disrespecting posters, or advocating right wing policies and you should do just fine here.

I personally have never had the problem that you are suggesting. Just ask away, sure you are going to get people that don't agree with you, but you'll get people who do agree with you. It's all part of debate and discussion. Don't be afraid to say what's on your mind. And as other people have stated, you've got to have a thick skin. Don't take disagreements personally.

You will get tombstoned if you make conservative arguments and challenge the wide range of democratic views expressed here.
I share many of the values and views expressed here and have not felt it necessary to "walk on eggshells" - even when I have disagreed with other participants. There is a lot of diversity here.
Edit to add: Forum rules make it clear that "Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office."

Any good debater (or attorney) will tell you that questions can be quite effectively used to advance and argue one's own position.
You are wrong to assume that asking any question you want is innocent - or will be perceived that way.
Edit for spelling.....
