Preacher Arrested, Bradley County
WDEF-TV News 12
Jun 15, 2005 5:04 PM EDT

An Ooltewah Minister faces domestic assault charges..

Police say he beat up his own daughter.

A family argument over whom the girl was dating led to the charge.

According to Bradley County Sheriff's reports, Community Baptist church Pastor Bryan Mowery spanked the girl with a belt first -- then threw her into a closet, kicked her and hit her in the face with his fist.

Mowery reportedly also got a nine millimeter handgun from his bedroom and fired it outside his Trewitt Road home.
<snip>

..now , if thats not bad enough - he runs (or ran?) a "combat4christ" training camp.

just what State would THIS be in? It doesn't surprise me it's a southern state, but Tn is a bit of a surprise. I live in Ga. so don't slam me for criticizing southerners. Here in Ga is where the Church was that had the weekly Sunday morning beatings of juviniles in front of the parrisioners as their punishment!

And we criticize the muslims.......

9. The enemies of C4C

You have fought with Hollywood and the Music Industry to gain the minds and hearts of America's youth. Many today within the Church are ready to surrender our most valuable resource (our children) to the enemy's camp. I AM NOT! God has a work for the young men and women of today. A work that depends on us to train and lead them to "fight the good fight of faith."

Bryan Mowery accepts pastoral position at Maple Street Baptist

Published February 10, 2006 10:35 AM EDT

Maple Street Baptist Church, 1700 Maple St., welcomes its new pastor, Bryan Mowery of Cleveland and his family. He accepted the pastorate position Jan. 29.

Mowery is a 1977 graduate of Bradley Central High School and entered the U.S. Army in 1980. He served four years (as an airborne ranger and small arms specialists) and was given an Accommodation Medal for decisive action during a relief effort.

He received an associate of applied science nursing degree from Cleveland State Community College and a bachelor's degree in applied science in the Bible from Bethany Bible College in Dothan, Ala.

He married Shelia Whaley in 1986 and they have three children: Jonathan Dale, 18; Channing, 16; and Corey, 14.

Mowery served as youth pastor at Philadelphia Baptist Church and at Bethel Baptist Tabernacle. He was ordained at Bethel Baptist Tabernacle in 1994 and accepted his first pastorate at John's Memorial Baptist Church in McDonald. His second pastorate was at Hampton Drive Baptist Church and from there went to community Missionary Baptist Church in Apison.

A bi-vocational pastor, Mowery is employed with Bradley Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse for Hospice and serves as chaplain. To most of his patients, he is known as "The Singing Hospice Nurse." He takes his guitar and ministers to them and their families through song. "This always puts a smile on their faces," he says. He has worked at Bradley Memorial since 1989 and in Hospice since 2000.

Combat4christ is, apparently, not the only Fundy gun nut program.

Pass the Lord and pass the ammunition Local church under fire for gun policy

ROYAL OAK (MI) — Packing heat and praising Jesus are cornerstones of an unusual local church where hundreds worship every Sunday by singing, dancing and screaming out messages delivered, they say, by the Lord.

Pastor Mark Byers urges the congregation to get concealed weapons permits and carry firearms to church.

The pastor also urges his flock to hit the firing range so their shooting skills are up to snuff, and he admits that he permits senior staff at the church's day care and elementary school to carry guns — which police say is illegal.

SNIP

Royal Oak police investigated what some say is a dangerous situation led by an egotistical minister who follows his own rules.

40. Often, it's willful ignorance
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 04:39 PM by MountainLaurel
Of lifestyles and cultures they've never been exposed to. Unless you've had firsthand contact with these people or read about them, it's hard to know even that they even exist. I think progressives must make an effort to inform themselves because they truly do underestimate these people, thinking them as just a few fanatics instead of the voices for an entire movement. It's much easier to laugh at them or discount them to find out about them. Mark Crispin Miller's book "Fooled Again" addresses this need for education as well.

As an example, my husband and I rented the movie "Saved" a while back. Afterward, we were talking about our reactions to it, and he said something to the effect of "It seemed a little overdone; after all, who would send their kid to a gay reeducation facility? And there can't be private high schools this crazy out there." Keep in mind, that he lived most of his life in comparatively urban areas such as DC, Seattle, St. Louis, and Knoxville (ages 11-19 were in Seattle, where he attended a progressive Catholic school and then college). I, on the other hand, grew up in small-town WV, where I attended a fundamentalist, independent, Baptist church between the ages of 8-20. I had to do some educating that night, about fundamentalist Christian high schools, gay kids being sent away to camps designed to make them straight, Christian companies that sell tools for beating your children, women who aren't "allowed" to wear pants or cut their hair, and the evil that is Christian rock. Despite treating politics the way some people follow the NFL season, he just had no idea these people were out there or that they carried so much influence.

Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 12:54 PM by converted_democrat
I left at 18. I knew that there had to be "normal" people out there, and I made it my mission to find them.. I was really lucky that I "made it" because if I would've had to go back.. Jesus, I can't even imagine.. There are 3 girls in my family and I'm the oldest.. I'm the only one that got out.. I've tried to offer my sisters a hand to get out, but I think they are too far gone to even help. I was raised Church of Christ in Christian Union, but my Mom and Dad went Evangelical when I was in my mid teens.. The CCICU was "normal" in comparison to these folks.. Talking in tounges..Anyone that didn't toe the line was possessed by deamons..Beatings for the smallest infractions. It was a bad bad way to live.. I grew up in Southeastern Ohio, so I bet our lives weren't all that different. If you ever need to talk, or you need anything you PM me.. No one understands this stuff unless they've had first hand experience.. If you ever need to talk, you know where I am.

42. I was incredibly lucky
Neither of my parents attended church, so I had that counterbalancing influence of sanity. While at church I may have heard that women shouldn't work once they were married, I had my mom telling me that I WOULD go to college.

In the end, it was the gay hating of the college youth group I occasionally participated in that completely turned my heart. I had always been appalled by the comments about needing to send gays off to an island or that AIDS was a hammer of God to kill the homosexuals. But when my best friend told me she was bisexual, I knew I could not stay silent anymore. How could these people think that my Sara -- who got me a bucket when I was puking drunk, made me mashed potatoes and pudding after I had my wisdom teeth out, lent me her car or rearranged her schedule to pick me up from work when my beater was broken down was witty and wise -- be this font of evil?
