What BIG political stories were in the news when you first found DU? |
|
For me it was Bush reneging on American acceptance participation in the ICC and a couple of the other international treaties that were signed by Clinton towards the end of his last term.

5. I think it was CRS report that Bush could cancel elections ... |
|
I could be wrong, but I think I started posting seriously when AAR was broadcasting stories about the Bush people thinking about cancelling the 2004 elections because of the "threat" of terrorism.
That's yet another important story that has disappeared down the memory hole.

7. The presidential debates |
|
Thread after thread about the debates. I racked up my post count pretty quick!
I think I coined the phrase "Furious George" after one of them, when he seemed really angry the whole time (the 2nd debate?).

The US sub that surfaced & sank the Japanese boat while being run by some big GOPAC donor?
I don't even remember exactly. It was late spring 2001, anyway, iirc.

I actually came looking for a non-jingoistic website. I had been posting at the yahoo boards and the like, and all I was seeing was calls to nuke this country or that one or the other, along with complete and utter support for Bush. So I think it was either late September or early November when I joined. And boy was I happy to find this place.
(attn fact-checkers: my previous screen name was disgustipatedinCA, under which I originally registered)

was my introduction to the internet for purposes other than shopping or work related issues. I found DU almost immediately and I remember that I was so pissed that I found "underground" very appealing. It sounded dangerous. I joined a few weeks later and have been here ever since.

13. The stolen election of 2004...... |

And the subsequent failure of Kerry to follow through with investigation in vote suppression, mysterious growth in votes for bush and unexplanable surplus of pro bush voters in districts that superceded the total registered voters, democrat, republican, independents, green etc.
