Our school reinstated the pledge today |
|
I haven't heard the pledge at our public high school in over a year now. Today on announcements, they said they were, at the request of some staff members, going to begin a daily moment of silence to reflect on the situation our country is in, think about our brave soldiers, and say the pledge if you wish.
Nobody in my classroom said it at all; there was no sign of interest whatsoever. It was almost eerie.

1. Think people were stunned? |

I mean, don't people walk around with these heavy things hanging over their heads every day...and then to be told to quietly reflect on them?
Bizarre.

3. They didn't look stunned |

they looked like they were tired of me telling them to be quiet during announcements, like I do every day. :)
If they'd seemed either engaged, or defiant, it would have been less spooky. I know the school went out of its way to ensure it was voluntary, and carefully not phrased like it was prayer time, which I appreciate. I asked a kid who was in a different classroom for announcements if anyone there said it, and he very matter of factly said no, like it was no big deal.
I remember being dragged in front of the class as a kid and yelled at for not saying the under god part - even though I said the rest of it like everyone else. It's just so odd for me now to see the subtle attempt at pushing kids to swear their allegiance to the flag being so completely and utterly ignored.

Our country is in, but that could mean different things to different people. Fear not, as a boomer I said the pledge evey morning till high school and didn't have any idea what it ment....it was just a bunch of words.

I pledge allegiance to the Dollar Sign of the Multi-national Corporations of America, and to New World Order for which it stands. One Serfdom, Under W, with vast inequity and Orwellian nightmares for ALL!
And that's my thought-crime, and I'm sticking to it.
