Who goes quail-hunting at 5:30 pm?
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 06:44 PM by Stephanie
Isn't that a morning activity? My grandpa used to hunt quail. I thought it was something you got up at dawn to do. Was it getting dark yet in TX at 5:30? It's illegal to hunt too close to sunset.

1. Texas law calls for no shooting within 30 minutes of sunup/sunset.
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 06:49 PM by TomInTib
I will see what time sunset was Saturday.

On edit:
Sunset was 6:08 pm Saturday, Feb 11.

2. this was a game farm
they released the tame birds right in front of the "hunters". It's not like there was any real stalking or hunting going on here - pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel.

19. Says who?
There is plenty of good quail hunting in South Texas. What news source said it was a game farm?

30. I might have jumped the gun
so to speak. I had skimmed this thread:

earlier and failed to notice the Pennsylvania dateline.

32. Yeah, I figured that was probably it. This story has long enough
legs on its own and doesn't need any creative embellishment. I even heard one of Jon Stewart's associates allude to it being a canned hunt last night.

3. Yeah, it's a bit odd...
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 06:49 PM by punpirate
... central time, in south central Texas, there might be another half-hour to forty-five minutes before dusk, this time of year. But, then, this isn't hunting. This is rich people with guns going out to pre-stocked areas. Blast away, then jump in the truck and head back to the big house on the hill in time for the cocktail hour.

edit typo.

4. I used to go any time I had time,
morning or afternoon. Made no difference.

A little bit off topic: I hear on the news people saying that "this is a fairly common occurrence." Must be I am too careful, because any time I pull up to shoot I am keenly aware of what lies beyond what I am shooting at. Yes, these accidents happen, but only when the shooter is a dumb shit.

7. Stats from Texas...
... list a million licensed Texas hunters in 2004. In that year, there were 29 hunting accidents, 19 involving guns, with four fatalities.

According to Texas Parks & Wildlife, it's not at all common in Texas.

11. there you go
thanks! Fifty out of a million! What percentage is that? I wonder if there is a common denominator, such as drink or drugs impairment, or fraily of age and ill health.

13. TP&W lists the most common denominator...
... to be fatigue.

19 gunshot accidents while hunting in a year. Doesn't sound like a lot for a state the size and population of Texas.

Maybe Cheney was all tuckered out.

12. oh, so only 19 gun accidents out of one million hunters?
does that include any of the fatalities? So the odds are 19/1,000,000?

27. Humor hahahaha
Pull a 180. Sail the ship back wards.

All I ever shot with a 'gun' was targets except once I made a hip shot with 22 rifle in the general direction of a red headed wood pecker. Oh my I hit it. Never again I tell myself as I held the bleeding body in my trembling hand.

If you do not eat it do not kill it. These guys kill just for fun.

10. I saw the stats at the TX website
It was PR about how the # of accidents had gone down last year. It was something like four fatalities and maybe 24 accidents? I'll see if I can find it.

15. cnn just had a guy on showing the type bullet cheney used..hubby
said bullshit..and totally uninformed reporter..my hubby said that type bullet would blow up a quail..the type bullet the guy showed was the type you would use on a turkey..not a little quail..

hubby said quail would be annihilated with that size bullet..

seems to me these stories by this media are getting more bizzare by the minute!

23. not the one that the cnn guy had in his hand.,the one he was showing was..
high base high velocity, buck shot OO buck shot..quail hunters use 7 1/2 or 8 low base shells..

i am talking about the reporter that was on cnn showing what he said Cheney used..he was showing an example...my husband said bullshit...

and i said bullet not my husband hubby said shell..i got it wrong...

to me..shell /bullet..whats the difference..but to hunters there is a big difference...

and to my hubby ..a real big difference, as he was shot years ago..with a 12 gauge
shot gun.. while hunting...with a 8 shell. ..he was hit all over his body with the pellets...and a pellet went into his eye and detatched his retina...he will have a patch on his retina for life..but he did regain sight... thanks to an excellent chinese surgeon.

Where were the ranch hands? The dog wranglers, lunch carriers? Nah. Sounds like these four were out in the fields on their own. Expensive thrills.
