TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Floridians who help a minor drink will be not be allowed to drive under a bill approved by a Senate Regulated Industries Committee on Tuesday.
The measure (SB 1322) would allow the Department of Highway Safety to revoke or suspend driving rights for adults who supply underage drinkers with alcohol.
"We think the loss of driving privileges is a real stinger," said Sen. Jim King, R-Jacksonville, the bill's sponsor.
Providing minors with alcohol is a second degree misdemeanor and already carries a maximum fine of $500, but the bill will strengthen efforts to curb underage drinking, said Rep. Trey Traviesa, R-Brandon, who is sponsoring an identical bill (HB 1049).
