molly ivans tells the TRUTH about the cheney shooting ->
copied this header from the democracyforamerica.com blog:

Cheney Shoots a Texas Liberal

Molly Ivins, as usual, has a forthright take on Cheney's fateful gunshot. While other members of the media are concerned with the delay in reporting the accident, as well as Cheney's lack of a proper quail-hunting license, Molly goes right for the heart of the matter, with a look at the hypocrisy of placing blame everywhere else but on the trigger man:

I was offended by the never-our-fault White House spin team. Cheney adviser Mary Matalin said of her boss, "He was not careless or incautious violate of any of the . He didn't do anything he wasn't supposed to do." OF COURSE HE DID, MS MATALIN, HE SHOT HARRY WHITTINGTON."(MY CAPS)

THERE IT IS IN PLAIN TEXT.

5. victim a 'liberal TX republican'
....

...Dick-Cheney-shooting-Harry-Whittington is fraught, as they say, with irony. It’s not as though the ground in Texas is littered with liberal Republicans. I think the vice president winged the only one we’ve got.

Not that I accuse Harry Whittington of being an actual liberal—only by Texas Republican standards, and that sets the bar about the height of a matchbook. Nevertheless, Whittington is seriously civilized, particularly on the issues of crime, punishment and prisons. He served on both the Texas Board of Corrections and on the bonding authority that builds prisons. As he has often said, prisons do not curb crime, they are hothouses for crime: “Prisons are to crime what greenhouses are to plants.”

In the day, whenever there was an especially bad case of new-ignoramus-in-the-legislature—a “lock ’em all up and throw away the key” type—the senior members used to send the prison-happy, tuff-on-crime neophyte to see Harry Whittington, a Republican after all, for a little basic education on the cost of prisons.

When Whittington was the chairman of Texas Public Finance Authority, he had a devastating set of numbers on the demand for more, more, more prison beds. As Whittington was wont to point out, the only thing prisons are good for is segregating violent people from the rest of society, and most of them belong in psychiatric hospitals to begin with. The severity of sentences has no effect on crime.

4. Great article... Everyone should read it.
She really puts into perspective how the "personal responsibility" champions Bush and Cheney are so miserably lax in taking responsibility for anything. Bless ya Molly!

7. Well when it comes to Texas politics...
she's the queen and this is right up her alley. I figured she'd have something to say about this situation.

8. She's nationally known,though. I'm in Massachusetts and have
been familiar with her work for many years.

Another favorite of mine was the late Mary McGrorey.

9. Have you read "Who Let the Dogs In?"
Great book. A collection of her columns over the years. She speaks a lot of sense, just with a Texas accent. You are right. She crosses regional lines. She's a national treasure.

12. Read it now....
I think most of us need the retrospective of what happened under Bush Pere, Raygun and Clinton to really remember and understand what's going on right now.

I've got it on audio, and the woman who reads it is incredible. (It's not Miss Ivins.)

There are so many dots that go unconnected that she can tinkertoy together it's incredible. If we had a press corps without amnesia and the inability to form new memories, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in.

I don't necessarily agree with her that * isn't dumb, but then again, she's known him at least slightly for a lot longer than I have, and my theory that he's got some sort of organic brain disorder (i.e. epilepsy or a degenerative disorder brought on by all the years on the sauce or Alzheimer's) may be accurate in that he wasn't always this dumb.

13. Yep...
She's an equal opportunity journalist. She was sometimes pretty brutal on Clinton and even Carter. She's not a partisan by any means. She has known some true populists and she holds pols to a very high standard.

What's so funny to me is that the right paints her as an ultra-liberal. I don't see that at all but then it's not the first time I've disagreed with cons about who in the media is a lib.
