Matalin's Finished Too ---pix->>>
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 04:35 PM by Stephanie

She really screwed this one up and she knows it. Matalin is toast.

White House Deferred to Cheney on Shooting
In a Break With Policy, Hunting Accident Was Not Disclosed for 14 Hours
Tuesday, February 14, 2006; Page A01

<excerpt>

The White House typically releases information immediately on incidents involving the president's personal life, such as bike-riding accidents, to avoid the appearance of covering up embarrassments. It is highly unusual, if not unprecedented, for the White House to allow a private citizen serve as its de facto spokesman.

But current and former aides said the White House rarely imposes its practices, especially on press matters, on Cheney. The vice president's office often operates autonomously in a manner that many top White House officials are reluctant to challenge.

In this case, Cheney worked with family members and former aide Mary Matalin on how to handle the fallout of the shooting accident, said a person close to the vice president who demanded anonymity to talk about internal discussions.

2. Um, she had the ranch owner release the story to a local paper?
She had Cheney hide out for four days before speaking about it. Didn't release the news to the WH press corps. Withheld it for 14 hours. Etc.

5. I think she originally suggested to the media that this was a
private matter between Cheney and a private citizen on a private ranch, as if that made a difference. I htink she was actually trying to cover for Cheney's original screw-up in handling this.

14. She also stated Dick did nothing wrong; in fact he did everything right
Which means he shot Whittington on purpose. Now, I know that's not what she meant to convey, but she did, and it's inexcusable for the Veep's PR flack to be that sloppy.

28. somehow I don't believe Matalin was hands-on in this
I'm pretty sure Cheney put on the iron gloves and issued the rubber ball gags himself on this one. Matalin, as much as I detest her, surely is more professional than this incident made her look.

I want to think that, anyway, god knows why...

Maybe she just wanted to get it over with so she could party down with Mardi Gras James Carville so she said anything that came to mind.

8. Good - I think media's been protecting her on Plame, too. This is why
I didn't trust Carville from 2003 thru now - he KNEW they outed Plame and even wrote glowingly about Rove KNOWING about his treason.

Carville had too much to protect and wouldn't want an open-government Democrat in power, either.

20. No, I mean to cover the situation! Here:
Cheney told Hume that Ranch owner Katharine Armstrong made the call to the local media because she was an "acknowledged expert," had "grown up on the ranch," had been a former official with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, along with being an eyewitness to the shooting. Cheney also said that Rove communicated with Armstrong since he knew her, and had hunted before at the Armstrong Ranch.

The agency that will oversee the rebuilding and reconstruction of Louisiana. She has never showed up to a meeting. She has never toured the destroyed parts of Louisiana. When she is on tv or the radio she never mentions that she serves on the LRA, or discusses hurricane related issues. As far as I am concerned, she is totally useless.

35. LOVE what Molly Ivins said about Matalin's piz-poor spin:
The buck stops... where?
Again, the White House can't face up to a mistake

Molly Ivins
Tuesday, February 14, 2006; Posted: 12:39 p.m. EST (17:39 GMT)

I am not trying to make a big deal out of a simple hunting accident for partisan purposes -- just thought it was a good chance to pay tribute to old Harry, a thoroughly decent man. However, I was offended by the never-our-fault White House spin team. Cheney adviser Mary Matalin said of her boss, "He was not careless or incautious (and did not) violate of any of the (rules). He didn't do anything he wasn't supposed to do." Of course he did, Ms. Matalin, he shot Harry Whittington.

Go git 'em, Molly!

from the yahoo article (emphasis mine)

"Cheney said he had agreed that Armstrong should be the one to make the story public because she was an eyewitness, because she grew up on the ranch and because she is "an acknowledged expert in all of this"

But she said that she at first had thought that it was Cheney that was down..when she saw personnel running towards them..

-so which is it? -
