1. I will be honest...I have 2 DUIs...
and each time I was pulled over, I said "one or two beers", at least initially. Believe me, it was always far more.

8. My last DUI
was in 1985, I have learned, you can't beat it, unless the cops made a "bad" stop.

I am a resposible drinker, to get anywhere around here a drivers license is needed.

asked by the cop (who hasn't lost his sense of smell) answers to the question--'Have you been drinking tonight sir/ma'am?'

"A beer."

"Step outta the car..."

For every 1 they claim, they've actually had 6.

6. I saw a show once...
Where the police actually go by that theory. When people say they've had one, it really means they're drunk. Best thing to claim is that you've had none. Unless of course you can't talk straight, then you're busted.

4. Any nurse will tell you that when a patient admits to drinking daily
we immediately double whatever he tells us he drinks. Those of us with a knack for spotting the drinkers (like those of us who are ACOA) may quadruple it for the obvious problem drinkers.

Functional alcoholics are really hard to get through to. It takes people who have been there, done that, recovering alcoholics who are working in detox and rehab facilities. Cheney still qualifies as a functional alcoholic; his boss is less so.

So yeah, if he says a beer, I think 4. If he says a couple of beers, I think 6 or 8.

9. are you saying...
Cheney is also an alcoholic?
Yes, I am differentiating between someone who enjoys a drink but does not have the gene that turns alcohol and possibly other substances into a severe problem.
I respect all of you who have dealt with this problem and are dealing with it; I know it's a 24/7 thing and a tough one.
:applause: :patriot:

Is there anyway we can get Bush and Cheney out of office on competency or health reasons? I won't ride with a drunk driver; we sure as hell don't need an incapacitated POTUS and VPOTUS driving the country!
:scared: :hide:

10. Less functional or less alcoholic?
:-)

I think you're right about functional alcoholics. A good friend of mine who was very active and involved in our town used to spend each and every night getting falling down drunk. It was really sad because I saw their health declining steadily. Even getting arrested didn't do it -- it was the fault of the neighbors who called the cops when my friend was out on his porch at three in the morning in his underwear screaming at passing cars. Finally a year after the arrest it took going on a bender for nearly a week straight and being absolutely unabled to remember anything about it and suffering from DT for days after that my friend admitted he was an alcoholic and went to AA. Thankfully he's been sober for two years now.

13. But who's counting? ;)
Come to think of it, 2 DUI's is not an ordinary record for someone who claims to be so responsible and all-knowing.

12. "sometimes a beer is just a beer" to paraphrase Freud...
I was once driving at 4 AM (I keep weird hours), and I go through a checkpoint. The cop asks if I've been drinking and I tell him the truth, that I had a beer with dinner at 7:00. He waved me through.
