Freepers JUST AS MAD About the Port Control Issue... Common Ground?
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 06:45 PM by berni_mccoy
Is there actually something the Freepers agree with us on? Check it out:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1577170/posts

How long before they rationalize this as a great move by BushCo?

Something to the effect of "We're selling our land over here so they don't buy it over there..."

On Edit: Here are some of the first responses:

(ALSO RATE THIS UP! I Want the FREEPERS TO SEE WE ARE ON THE SAME PAGE!)

While we're at it, why don't we put them in charge of our airport screeners, subway security and Los Alamos?

Dang! I searched using keyword Dubai and also the title itself, but neither search turned up these articles. No wonder, each article has its own unique title. Go figure.
Mods, guess this will have to be pulled?

Now I see why they didn't show up in my search. None of the three articles you linked had Dubai in their keywords, yet.

Thank God for Lou Dobbs and the Freepers on this one. I really mean it. This just seems like one of those creepy decisions that would be laying the groundwork for a false flag terror attack. Or, not quite as bad, it just shows how not only transnational corporations, but the politicians they put into power, DO NOT have loyalty to the United States.

And an excellent point, too. Of course we disagree on a zillion things, but issues like invasion of privacy, lying to the American public, fiscal irresponsibility, etc, would have had Republicans up in arms before the right wing managed to convince them that sycophancy was equivalent to patriotism.

27. Agreed!
Let's not forget that the Bush supporters have been systematically taught to hate ALL Muslims, ALL Arabs -- that's the groundwork that had to be laid in order for the 'playing the FEAR card' gambit to work when required.

"... politically, when you boil away all the partisanship, we have more in common with them from a policy standpoint than we do differences."

I've said that many times here - and I have the flame marks to prove it.

You can't convince Mr. and Mrs. Redneck in Podunk to be suspicious of everyone in the ME - and then turn around and convince them that SOME of these people are actually our trustworthy friends.

Methinks this Administration has just been snared in the very trap they've unwittingly set for themselves.

Division of the citizenry has been the weapon this Admin has continually used to push their political agenda. But on this ISSUE, we are united.

And once Americans are UNITED in any cause, there's no STOPPING US!

Let's not forget that the die-hard Bush supporters have bought the 'fear terrorists at every turn', 'we don't negotiate with terrorists', not to mention the Ann Coulters of the world constantly reminding the Freepers that ALL arabs are 'murderous tent merchants and evil towel-heads'.

Bush would have gotten a better reception if he'd announced amending the Constitution to legalize gay marriage, taxation of Fundie churches and drive-through abortion clinics on every corner.

So NOW it finally hits home with the Freepers - BushCo doesn't care about them any more than he cares about us!

security. Imagine supporting your leader because you believe he's gonna keep you safe only to discover he thinks this is a good idea. There are a lot of republicans who don't like this administration but I don't think president bashing is encouraged at FR. There's common ground but the politicians have to twist it so we look stupid for complaining to keep the country divided.

For instance, the other day a rightwing paper made a big deal about Gore speaking to Saudis and made a remark about Saudis being allowed to leave on private planes right after 9/11. The left sees that as a favor to friends of the president. What IF it was a...how to put it?...nation thing, a favor from our nation that had nothing to do with party or friendship? Would anyone believe that or is it necessary to think the other side was doing something sneaky?

41. It was Les Kinsolving's question today at the gaggle
Les Kinsolving, the slighty crazy winger who always asks Scotty two questions and always prefaces both by saying, "Two questions, Scott." Often he invites Scotty to blame things on the Clintons or the press. But his first question today was about the ports.

Sooner or later, when you go far enough right and far enough left, you will meet on the other side. Of course, the right has preferred to remain in their cocoon "cult of Bush" but this could be the button-pusher.

We need to keep talking about it, too. It hasn't yet really entered the traditional press. With both the left and the right condemning it, we have to see that it gets to those who don't know what to think until they're told.

66. I'm not talking about just wealth...
unlike others, I'm not going to ridicule people who have amassed great amounts of wealth just because they are wealthy. I am ridiculing people "tied together at the top" (as Rumsfeld calls it) of governments and banks in Saudi Arabia and Dubai who have demonstrated collusion with the Bush family, illegal dealings, and money-laundering ties to Osama bin Ladin and al Qaeda. If there are such clear ties to the wealthy British port owners then I would be concerned about them as well.

68. There are no connections directly with the government of Dubai
If anything, exactly the opposite. Google Bill Clinton and see how many times he has been the guest of the Dubai government since leaving office.

Collusion with Bush family? Nothing that I have ever seen evidence of...

As for money-laundering... the UAE is for better, or worse the Switzerland of the Middle-east. Things have become much tighter here since 9/11, but alot of banking goes on... where there are banks, there are always bad bankers willing to do favors for people.

Let's be specific with charges we make especially about 9/11...

Hijackers had bank account in and spent most of their time in Germany. Do we blame the Germans for 9/11?

There is 0 proof the government of Dubai was involved in any way with terrorist acitivities. Ditto for the UAE national government.

73. I've posted this in other threads, might as well post it here....
From the "Forbidden Truth", page 91:

Another bank believed to have facilitated transfers for Osama bin Ladin's networks was the Dubai Islamic Bank<30>, created in 1975, based in the United Arab Emirates, and run by none other than the current minister of finance of the United Arab Emirates<31>. According to the CIA, these transfers fed organizations associated with bin Ladin. The Dubai Islamic Bank was also one of the principal shareholders in the BCCI with more than $80 million in assets there. The bank has been involved in several scandals...

<30> Bankers Almanack, 2000; IAC Company Intelligence, 2001.
<31> Among its shareholders are the governments of Dubai and Kuwait (which account for 10 percent of the capital). The bank is a shareholder in Bahrain Islamic Bank, Islamic Bank Bangladesh Ltd., and Tadamon, and also has investments in Al Shamal Islamic Bank.

Also, you may want to check out this link which describes in detail the long and tangled history between the Bush family and the elite of Saudi Arabia, also the breakdown of intelligence surrounding 9/11:

70. RACISM? Prove it.
This HAS NOTHING to do with racism and everything to do with Security and allowing AMERICANS TO CONTROL THEIR OWN PORTS.

The fact is, the ports should be controlled BY AMERICANS. The fact that they were controlled by Brits before is irrelevant.

Our port security HAS BEEN BAD and WILL REMAIN BAD, ESPECIALLY IF A MIDDLE EASTERN COUNTRY IS ALLOWED TO CONTROL SIX MAJOR PORTS.

And don't give me any FREE MARKET crap. The Global Market is not a Free Market. The Middle East does not run on a Free Market system either. If we want free market in the U.S., let only American companies (WHO DO NOT OUTSOURCE) control security sensitive operations.

We don't outsource our defense, we should NOT OUTSOURCE OUR SECURITY.

46. I quizzed a repug petition seeker ton that today....
As usual, she was trying to get signatures to repeal taxes (and people sign without even reading it!), I asked her if she had any petitions pertaining to the selling of American ports to the people that financed the 9/11 attacks? She was dumbstruck... then I asked her if she had a petition to stop the 8 billion dollar giveaway to the oil companies. Deer in headlights...

48. Free market anyone?
I'm normally not the free-market advocate in the room. Usually I'm arguing against said person, but come on people! You can sneak anything you want through U.S. ports currently. The freakin cargo containers aren't even opened and inspected! What does this change? Who cares who owns it! You can't do a more mediocre job than is already being done! I say let Dubai have it. It is not like it is a bigger security risk with a different company at the head. Moreover, it is still American workers, unionized at that, that will be actually doing the day to day operations running the port. This reaction is a little out of proportion.

51. How long before they believe it's great? Just as soon as Cheney tells
them so... they are so stupid.. The same people who worked with Bush and Cheney to pull off 9-11 and they are helping these jackals give our ports to them. Will they EVER realize that Bush and Cheney are the biggest criminals in history?

53. It's so awful, even a freeper can see it. BACKGROUND thread on this issue:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2454971
thread title (2-12-06 GD-P): 911 Bankers to Run SIX Major U.S. Ports—Dubai(UAE). IMPEACH NOW!!!
Comment/excerpt: “Six ports will be run and protected by a Dubai based port management company (DP World): New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia. The deal was approved by a “U.S. government panel coordinated out of the White House. Just prior to the deal, David C. Sanborn of Virginia was appointed as administrator of the Maritime Administration of the Transportation Department. Sanborn worked as DP World's director of operations for Europe and Latin America.…. A company in the United Arab Emirates is poised to take over significant operations at six American ports as part of a corporate sale, leaving a country with ties to the Sept. 11 hijackers with influence over a maritime industry considered vulnerable to terrorism.“

57. Even businesspeople have been taken for a ride....
Prior to the Iraq invasion there was an article in Forbes about how Iraqi oil would allow for competition with OPEC and would eventually drive the price of oil down. No wonder GM and Ford started turning out all the big SUVs and monster trucks. Later, Cheney decided it wasn't such a good idea to compete with OPEC. We all know what has happened since.

62. United over a little "light treason"

What's even worse is that UAE supports Iran...

"According to Al-Bayan newspaper, statistics issued by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry show that the value of the total non-oil exchanges between the UAE and Iran hit $3.3 billion last year..."
