Bryant Gumbel and 9/11
Thosse of us who purchased the CBS DVD of the events of the day, or were watching closely at the time, will never forget Gumbel's complete idiocy when reporting the initial attacks upon the Trade Towers. To only slightly paraphrase, he was interviewing a gal who was a most cogent eyewitness to the impact of the first plane. She, I believe, was at the Marriott Hotel. While he's asking her stupid questions she suddenly screams that there's been another plane which hit the second tower. He states that he didn't see anything watching his monitor even though it was clear on the re-rack of the video. she then reiterated that a place "deliberately" hit the tower, at which point the moron says to her "What makes you think it was deliberate?" or words almost exactly to thaT effect. Then, there is an immediate cut to Dan Rather as narrator of the video.

Methinks that they left this part in to make a complete ass of Gumbel who left the network shortly thereafter. Interstingly, his brother, who was considered an also-ran, is better at his job than the Prince of Men is at his, IMO.

1. He had an very interesting
commentary Friday where he said that the winter olympics were boring and had "fewer blacks than a GOP convention," which was kind of funny. But there are global realities involved: cold weather, mountain, northern lands...

Kind of a xenophobic attitude.

whatever...I think he's an arrogant man. I turn him off.

4. Thanks...
I agree...he was the first host of the TODAY show who I thought was over his head. Of course, i rmember Dave Garroway and what they did to him with the monkey...demeaning intellectuals on TV is nothing new.

Problem with Bryant in those days is that you couldn't criticize him without starting a problem. Now of course, it's de riguer to call him pompous...

2. cbs has a dvd of 911?
it would be fun to see what the lying bastards put on the record
btw, to be a worker in the pigmedia must be a real challenge to appear decisive and smart etc while protecting the pigmaster and not looking too eager to inform the public etc

7. Yes, I have it
it is called "What we saw" or something like that. It is a book and a DVD. It's kind of surreal. Attempting to remain professional and detached while the world around you is crumbling is bizarre. I mean, I don't know what I would expect..certainly not panic. But it was pretty monotone.

10. i'd be curious to see it....
i'll do a google on it, amazon and soon....as you know, cbs was doctoring stuff from the getgo- they doctored the arlen spector 'connect the dots' bit, in their archives, that was news back in '02 if i remember right (at the time of 'bush knew') after the guy admitted that bush inc had the 'blueprint' to 911 and didn't need any connecting dots...too nmuch interest in the archival record caused them to fixit...goddam them (lol)

3. I can't stand Gumbel.
I think he's an arrogant ass.

His brother seems amiable and nice from what I've seen of him.

But Bryant is a dipshit. I don't care what color he is.

5. Gumble Grew A Real Big Head
Too much success at too young an age. He was NBC's golden boy for years and ran roughshod around the place...pissed off a lot of people along the way who were all but happy to see him go down. It wasn't just 9/11...there were a bunch of idiotic Gumble statements at the time...including his inability to get along with his co-anchors and CBS bosses. And, of course, the ratings never improved. Now he's on HBO...barely and looks like he's been taken down a few notches.

I remember his brother as a sportscaster here in Chicago and had the chance to meet Greg several times...a nice guy and one who worked hard to get where he is. While his brother was big time in New York, Greg went from market to market and just worked hard.

There used to be a website that had all the 9/11 videos...from all the American networks as well as from around the world. That was a fascinating site and I haven't been able to locate it for a couple years.

6. It''d be great if
somebody could identify that site for us...

The CNN DVD and the CBS DVD edit too much...the As It Happened type is the best...there's one of NBC coverage of the Kennedy Assassination which is marvelous...real reporting in real time
