Millions of dollars in Sept. 11 terror funds are being spent on items
such as bulletproof dog vests, public speaking courses and plasma TVs,
two New York lawmakers charged Sunday.
The federal government has doled out more than $8 billion to community
police and fire departments around the nation since 2001, but much of
the money has funded a middle America boondoggle, according to Rep.
Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y.
"People brag about these expenditures," Weiner said at a news
conference Sunday with David Weprin, a member of the New York city
council. "They see this as bringing home the bacon for their city."
Weiner, who sits on a House subcommittee for homeland security, said he
will introduce legislation this week to limit where high-threat funding
goes.
