SEN ROCKEFELLER: BUSH ADMIN AUTHORIZED LEAKS OF CLASSIFIED INFO!
More “authorized” White House leaks: In a letter made public today, Senate Intelligence Committee Vice-Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) says the Bush administration “authorized” leaks of classified information to reporter Bob Woodward and suggests the leaks may have damaged national security. ThinkProgress has obtained a copy of the letter. Murray Waas has more.

http://thinkprogress.org/2006/02/23/more-authorized-white-house-leaks/#comments

Did the Bush administration “authorize” the leak of classified information to Bob Woodward? And did those leaks damage national security?

The vice-chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) made exactly that charge tonight in a letter to John Negroponte, the Director of National Intelligence. What prompted Rockefeller to write Negroponte was a recent op-ed in the New York Times by CIA director Porter Goss complaining that leaks of classified information were the fault of “misguided whistleblowers.”

Rockefeller charged in his letter that the most “damaging revelations of intelligence sources and methods are generated primarily by Executive Branch officials pushing a particular policy, and not by the rank-and-file employees of intelligence agencies.”

Later in the same letter, Rockefeller said: “Given the Administration’s continuing abuse of intelligence information for political purposes, its criticism of leaks is extraordinarily hypocritical. Preventing damage to intelligence sources and methods from media leaks will not be possible until the highest level of the Administration cease to disclose classified information on a selective basis for political purposes.”

26. Be sure to take care of yourself - don't spend too much time
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 01:40 AM by Nothing Without Hope
in front of the computer without getting some excercise and eating and rehydrating. It's very bad for your health on multiple levels. And you need to cleanse your mind of all this horror by getting away into environments that will feed your soul - nature walks, concerts, art, good times with friends, whatever. The news is very important but most of it is a downer. Don't forget to pace yourself and watch over your own health, physical and emotional.

(And I need to be listening to that myself, too.)

13. Nope, you are wrong - Three Strikes!
One: If you declassify something then it is available for everyone... but not everyone got the info, so it was a leak of a part of classified document, not a decalssification. It is, or was, still classified.

Two: the American People never elected GW*. Not in 2000, not in 2004. Not ever. Both elections were stolen.

Three: He never released anything (see no. 1) he only leaked a few details.

He's a unelected leaker of classified documnts. And less.

14. Technically,
There are steps he is required to go through to declassify information.

Leaking classified information while continuing to spend government resources to protect that same information is not the same as declassification.

22. There was another post on DU in the last couple of days about the
process of declassification and, NO, the President is not the end all and be all of declassification. If the President wants something declassified, he must first consult with the Director of the CIA.

If anyone has the link to the earlier post, please post it. I'd like to read it more carefully.

23. He has to go to the source of the classification,
whether it be DOD, CIA or FBI etc. etc. to get a release from them , to declassify anything!!! This I don't "think"!! I KNOW !! Google it for yourself, and then come back with some more "challenging" words of wisdom!!

12. Los Angeles attack
President George W. Bush's disclosure of detailed intelligence about a thwarted al Qaeda plot to attack Los Angeles could prove damaging for U.S. national security, the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee said in a letter released on Thursday.

In a Feb. 17 letter to U.S. intelligence chief John Negroponte, Sen. John Rockefeller of West Virginia echoed a warning from CIA Director Porter Goss that revelations about intelligence successes or failures against al Qaeda can aid America's militant enemies.

"Why then did the president and the assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism describe in great detail the information about this plot contained in a highly classified October 2004 CIA document?" Rockefeller wrote. White House officials were not immediately available for comment.

The Senate Democrat was referring to a Feb. 9 presidential speech in which Bush disclosed new details of a 2002 al Qaeda plot to use shoe bombs to hijack a plane and fly it into the 1,017-foot-(310-metre) high US Bank Tower in Los Angeles.

Bob Woodward works for the CIA. You, being a U.S. Senator, are one of the few people in the world who doesn't know this. You must be a fucking moron.

Sincerely,

Porter Goss
