Here's the latest from the people who brought you massive, illegal wiretapping and the Patriot Act: Trust us when it comes to privacy. The Justice Department has filed papers in federal court contending that Google should comply with a subpoena to turn over massive amounts of information because it's not an invasion of privacy.

I agree there is more here at stake that trying to revive the Child Protection Law that was blocked by the Supreme Court. This is just another example of this administrations assault on our privacy while they maintain assertions that their "privacy" (or should I say secrecy) be upheld. Beyond that, using statistical information of this type (eg user queries) to support new laws is ripe for abuse. Once precedent is set, it would be an easy matter to find stats that support your position for/against whatever feel-good law they want to get re-elected or further an agenda.
