Google Video censors Iraq footage - for US only
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 03:23 PM by UpInArms
http://www.theregister.com/2006/02/27/google_censors_us_video/

Last month it was China, this month it’s the United States that a servile Google is doffing its cap to.

The internet search giant’s video service is blocking US viewers from seeing an innocuous piece of Iraq footage that Google delivers to internet users in the rest of the world without any problems.

The footage shows US military personnel detonating a roadside bomb in a controlled explosion. It’s accessible from everywhere except the United States. But US citizens - who bear the human and financial cost of such improvised weapons - are presented with this message:

Alas it's not Google that's doing the censoring - and a big red-faced Oops from The Reg. Google explained last week that uploaders had made the decision not to make the clip available to US internet users.

When will our government denounce this censorship? :sarcasm:

never know when a country might say "Joe@Blow.com" sent a video to our country that violates our obscenity laws, send him to us now! Or our laws against bashing our national religion or our king.

on edit, I doubt that is really Joe's e-mail, I didn't know it would hyperlink

7. Google Video Censorship - That Isn't
We've had numerous news submissions suggesting that Google is censoring certain videos. After the first submission we dug deeper and found it was a feature, not censorship: users who submit videos to Google are allowed to specify which countries they'd like to prevent seeing the video (under advanced settings). We wondered which website would bite on this without digging deeper: looks like The Register wins the prize.
