Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 04:23 PM by ECH1969
Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

"Nothing will happen until after the congressional elections," a GOP source said. "After that, there will be significant changes in the administration and Cheney will probably be part of that."

The sources said Mr. Cheney, 65, has been struggling with the departure of his closest aides. In addition to Mr. Libby, Mr. Cheney's media adviser, Steve Schmidt, has left to manage the re-election campaign of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He's the one running the show....not the idiot. I don't think he's finished furthering the PNAC agenda.

all his crimes? I don't want to see him sail into the sunset with his Halliburton profits that he stole at our expense.

9. That would make Cheney the third to resign from the office
Calhoun--became a senator
Agnew--was a crook

Last Oct. there was considerable noise that Cheney would resign this spring. I wonders if the time of Libby's court case didn't change the timing of the deal. Cheney will surely want to be around to protect Scooter Fibby.

13. bet against it
Keep in mind a replacement has to be confirmed by a majority of both the House and Senate and (1) the repub majorities in both chambers should (hopefully) be smaller (if not gone) after 2006 and (2) there are some heavyweights in both parties that want to run for president who aren't going to want someone to get a leg up. If (and I think its highly unlikely) Cheney were to step down, my bet is that whoever is named to replace him will have to publicly renounce any intention of running for president in 2008.

21. Funny, I think its just the opposite
I think the heir apparent will be the VP choice. They want to have an incumbent as their nominee to show americans continuity of government and their policies...NOW, IF everything goes badly in Iraq and Iran in the next year, I have no idea what they will do

22. there is no heir apparent -- political hardball time
McCain wants it. Frist wants it. Allen wants it. And that's just the repugs. THey each have their allies. And then there are the Dems. They will force whoever is named to renounce any intention of running for president to keep the field open for 2008. Its political hardball and there won't be anything chimpy can do to force his choice on the Senate and House.

By 1/07 it will be apparent who has the financial support of the GOP party. I think they will be the VP for 2 years..only time will tell who's correct

28. not a chance
it wasn't until Feb 2000 that Bush put away McCain by winning the SC primary. There will be no clear favorite among and between Frist, Allen, McCain and whoever else decides to jump in until the beginning of 2008.

Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 04:53 PM by Jade Fox
Republicans don't want Cheney in office. They want someone in the chute, someone who has a chance of being elected in 2008, and Cheney sure ain't it.

I think the GOP is pressuring Cheney to retire.

29. and who is the heir apparent
Allen, Frist, McCain all think they're the one. Hagel has ambitions. Rice says no, but everyone else thinks yes. Jeb says no, but lying runs in his genes.

McCain probably is the strongest candidate but many establishment repubs view him as a loose cannon because of his position on campaign reform, lobbying reform, etc. The fundies like Frist, but a lot of folks wonder if he's electable.

The feeling here in DC is that the race hasn't even begun.

Does anyone see Bush and Cheney serving out full terms?

The PNAC/Saudi agenda simply cannot be moved forward with this team. A wag-the-dog attack now will have an effect, at best, measured in months. Not nearly enough to lead what it will take to invade Iran.

I don't think they can tread-water (sorry) for 3 1/2 years, so I predict Cheney will step down and Bush will fade into the background. Who will front? Giuliani? Guesses?

27. Hmmm, if this were CHB, the usual crew would be flooding the thread.
"Look, no names, just 'GOP sources', obviously a figment of the writer's vivid imagination."

But since it is from a solidly right-wing source, no complaints.
