A friend of a friend just got fired for saying "I may go postal" at work
WTF? He's a German, working here on a visa and he was kidding around. He didn't even know he was in trouble until the police came to his door and asked him to tell them about what happened at work. He didn't have a clue what they were talking about. Once they sorted it all out as to what he said, he realized he was fired (the company didn't fire him, the cops did). The cops thought it was rediculous. Homeland Security was notified also. This is scarey.

11. think it thru - going postal = returning to workplace and shooting
the hell out of everyone - so,...the police intervene and make sure he never returns to the workplace for any reason and if he does, arrested. I'm sure an order was issued to restrain as well....

15. Get that, but
doesn't the company itself have the final say in this?

20. sounds like the 'postal' comment allows it to be put in the authorities
hands...

we are truly living in a police state. IMHO

2. The cops fired him? They can do that? What next, impromptu firing squads
of the more terminal kind?

3. Remember the German who got arrested on a plane a few years ago?
He said something like "If I don't use the restroom I shall explode!"

:nuke:

10. We have been groomed in a culture of fear.
It's not 9/11 that made us this way; it's BushCo who cultivates the most reactionary demeanor in all those who choose to believe their drivel.

4. I'm betting he was on a short list anyway
they were looking for any excuse to let him go, especially one that didn't involve having to pay unemployment.

He needs to sue the holy fuck out of them.

I'm not sure how the cops fire someone, unless they are a cop.

7. Cops told him the company did not want him to return to work
When he called to company to find out what the hell was going on, they told him that yes, he'd been fired. But they never officially fired him themselves. They sent the cops to investigate along with the message that they no longer required his services.

12. Typical, lack of spinal fortitude
Employers often lack the backbone to tell someone to their face that they're fired. Such squeamishness makes me wonder how they have the guts to run a business in the first place.

28. Now suppose you genuinely fear an incident?
Like the one a few weeks ago when the postal worker went into work and shot 6 or so people.

Now suppose you truly, as a manager responsible for the safety of the rest of the workers there, have a fear of some incident like this.

Are you saying that he is "spineless" for not letting the guy who is, for all he knows, homicidal and armed, come into work so he can fire him in person? No guts, you say?

Okay.

9. Is anyone else concerned by the fact...
Edited on Tue Feb-28-06 12:55 PM by TwoSparkles
...that, on a daily basis, we utter things on DU--which pale in comparison to "I may go postal."

So..is someone watching us and recording our every post?

Is that what those detention camps are for?

22. Just more evidence
Owners of that control business hire passive sheep who scare easily. This is the direction society is heading. This is no longer the home of the brave apparently.
