Christian School Spurns Alum Up For 'Brokeback' Oscar

POSTED: 1:04 pm PST March 2, 2006

SAN DIEGO -- Santa Fe Christian was proud of Michelle Williams when she performed in "Tom Sawyer" and other family plays at their school -- but the headmaster disapproves of her being in "Brokeback Mountain."

"We don't want to have anything to do with her in relation to that movie," Jim Hopson told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Hopson said that "Michelle doesn't represent the values" of the school and they do not approve of her movies and television shows, including "Dawson's Creek."

"I hope we offered her something in life. But she made the kinds of choices of which we wouldn't approve," Hopson told the Union Tribune. "'Brokeback Mountain' basically promotes a lifestyle we don't promote. It's not the word of God."

3. Mike Malloy would love this one.
This is an example of how religion can really turn people into freaks. They want everyone to live under a rock.

4. Agree 100%
I didn't see God's name on the credits for screen writer either. Why should God share in the academy award (if the movie wins for screenplay) when God didn't help write it.

5. Superstitious Simpletons.
Religion should be outlawed. It breeds stupidity and causes the deaths of too many innocents.

8. IMHO, more like the anti-Superstition police.
I was raised in a Religious family and have seen nothing but pain and hate generated by the different sects.

It has turned into a pox upon humanity.

10. Then they'd kind of have to be thought police?
I sympathize with your upbringing.

And I know you're being a bit over the top and I'm messin' with you! Sorry.

14. Religion shouldn't be outlawed, that's ridiculous
Theocracies should be. The majority of the Christians in my life are wonderful, accepting, sincere people. And the Jews, And Hindus, and Pagans, etc. And, the atheists and agnostics. Religion doesn't twist people into intolerant beings, their own minds do. It does not breed stupidity or cause the death of innocents. Controlling sociopaths cause that -- and only use their religion as a cudgel. If you took away religion, they would still be doing it, just for another reason.

I agree with Grannie -- it's thought police. It's fascist.

9. More people have heard of Michelle Williams
than will ever hear about or care what this lame-ass headmaster has to say. I think that says it all.

11. D-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d- DOUCHEBAG
Hey, this douchebag is free to have his opinion, but that doesn't make him any less a douchebag.

Not to mention that films like Brokeback Mountain are what is doing "God's work" on earth, if you believe in such things...

13. Kudos to both Michelle and her mom
To Michelle for not being brainwashed (oh, she so deserves the Oscar!) and for her mother, a very religious woman who loves her daughter, is proud of her accomplishments, and is judging no one. The Williams women ROCK!

15. I'm rootin' for Michelle
now. I told my daughter yesterday I thought Rachel Weiz should win the Oscar but seeing this story, I now want Michelle to win. I thought she did a fine job in "Brokeback Mountain."
