Did Bob Woodward Record Key Plame Case Conversation?

Did Bob Woodward Record Key Plame Case Conversation?

By E&P Staff

Published: March 02, 2006 9:05 PM ET

NEW YORK A filing Thursday at U.S. District Court in the Plame/ CIA leak case suggests that Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward may have tape recorded his fateful conversaton with the so-called "second source"--besides Lewis "Scooter" Libby-- that is now a key part of the case.

Woodward suddenly revealed late last year that he had talked with Libby as well as another unnamed government official about CIA operative Valerie Plame, the wife of former Ambassador Joe Wilson. Earlier, columnist Robert Novak had also said he had an unnamed second source.

One paragraph in Thursday’s filing, NBC reported, indicates that the unnamed official spoke both with Woodward and Novak, and "Libby has been given a redacted transcript of the conversation between Woodward and and Novak has published an account briefly describing the conversation with his first confidential source ."

Does "transcript of the conversation" mean that there is an audio recording of the conversation between Woodward, Novak and the unnamed source? Or merely a detailed set of notes?

3. Hmmm, I just realized how absent from the airwaves Mr. Woodward
has been since it was revealed he was far from a disinterested, uninvolved commentator. Gee, I wonder why?

6. Ahhh, he's still carrying the bush cabal's water I see
When in trouble, shout terra, terra, terra. I am glad he is not being paid to be on the mainstream shows anymore, he doesn't deserve to be there in any way, imo.

7. Woodward's fall from grace...
...is punctuated by his persistence at making himself part of the story in irresponsible fashion.

Note, in that passage, Fitzgerald says the following about the Woodward testimony he has handed over:

Robert Woodward (that part of his deposition where he discusses his conversation with Mr. Libby and that part describing the substance of his conversation with his other source, , with name redacted).

Notice how he calls this person Woodward's "other" source. Does that mean Libby shared some details about Plame or Wilson in their June 25 conversation?

Finally, at paragraph 52, Fitzgerald says,

In addition, in the February 2 letter we took the added step of setting forth the nature of our understandings with counsel for Ms. Miller and the New York Times, though much of that information had not been reduced to writing previously.

This information would presumably reveal details of how Fitzgerald got Judy to admit to her June 23 meeting with Libby, as well as any details about limitations on her publication at the time. And it might include any legal jeopardy she was in when she testified.

Well, I'm going to go try to recreate my post describing under what circumstances Armitage would have shared Plame's identity, since (rather inconveniently) it gotten eaten by Typepad months ago.
