1. Surprise? I've never heard of any of them. They
are local, good for you, and I don't think I have that option.
I get to pick between Walmart and Target, Sams Club and no one, etc.
Between Lowes and Home Depot, is one better than the other?

15. Hollywood Theater is still there
and now has smaller theaters upstairs.

Lots of good and strange events there, a lot of music-connected film events.

Great place.

9. Within easy walking distance (4 blocks)
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 12:23 AM by htuttle
In Madison, WI (Williamson St neighborhood)

Willy St Food Cooperative
Schaefer Pharmacy (family business)
Ace Hardware on Williamson (independently owned)
Star Liquor
Bahn Thai Restaurant
Williamson Bicycle Works
Star Books
St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store
Bongo Video
Scooter Therapy
Mother Fools Coffee shop
Hempen Goods
Grandpa's Gun Shop
Lao Laan Xang Restaurant
BP Gas on Williamson (independently owned)
Crystal Corner Bar
Weary Traveller (restaurant)
Jolly Bob's Jamaican Restaurant
Jamerica (restaurant and Jamaican food store)
...and a few more I probably forgot, and another dozen if I want to walk a few more blocks.

About the only thing I can't get right in my neighborhood is a new car, but then again, I don't need one -- my neighborhood just rawks for walking...

13. The only thing is a local hardware store
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 01:27 AM by Nutmegger
There were a few clothing stores that my parents and I frequented but they've been put out by the likes of Wal-Mart. This one store had everything from clothes to old furniture to door handles. As a kid, I had fun just running around the tall, dark isles.

*sigh*

16. In Austin, Alamo Drafthouse
where you can watch a movie, drink beer or wine, and eat a pretty decent meal (pizza, burgers, salads, sandwiches, etc.) all at once! Four locations in Austin and now two in the Houston area and one in San Antonio.
