Please don't criticize your fellow DUer
We all know you are more intelligent, have a better command of the English language, have better decision making skills, spell better, know the proper forum in which to post, know the difference between they're, their and there, and have a mandate. But please, let it go. Let all the petty stuff go and your life will be so much happier. It's like the old saying, don't sweat the small stuff.

I'm a little more than annoyed that we don't have better things to do than to squelch someone else's ideas and creativity by being rude to them... "in public".

Might I suggest, if you think a post is improper in content or placement that you please notify an administrator and let them do their job. If it's spelling, grammar, etc., just let it go for the sake of all DUers having a safe haven in which to vent.

Thank you for making me become what I hate.

Sheesh.

Carry on.

3. OK
I ususally don't question spelling, grammar or usage unless I think it really affects the meaning of the post. Sometimes a spelling or grammar error can make it unclear what someone is saying.

I try not to be too anal about it all. :)

Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 03:05 PM by bryant69
which means we discuss things - we argue, we disagree. I agree that making fun of someone's grammer or spelling is pretty petty (not that I haven't done it), but being overly genteel would be just as bad in my opinion.

So they can learn. For instance, use the misspelled word in your own post and spell it correctly. You really can be genteel and helpful at the same time.

31. Tallahassee Grannie, I'm a legal transcriptionist...
I know what you're talking about. I don't know about Florida, but the overseers here in the Alaska court system go ballistic over spelling and punctuation errors. They'll send a whole transcript back and withhold your pay if you don't do it exactly right. I agree with the OP, though -- that kind of perfection is not required at DU.

15. My issue with that is this:
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 03:13 PM by hippiechick
Many Du'ers spend so much time posting about how stupid, ignorant and backwards the folks on FR and other right-leaning sites are, but then come back here and you'll find 500 duplicate/triplicate threads, a thousand 'I just farted, ask me anything' threads, innumerable misspellings - even of names of prominent Dems, for God's sake! - and grammar that would make a third grader laugh.

Yet we deride THEM as being 'morans'. Makes us sorta hypocritical, no?

If we're going to be the 'smart ones', then we should take a few seconds to hold ourselves to a little higher standard. If we don't feel the need to do that, then we shouldn't make fun of those on the other side of the fence when they do the same thing (we can still make fun of them for supporting an idiot, though ;) ) ...

40. I'd hate for people to feel they aren't educated enough to post here.
Honestly, the overall attention and care paid to language here is very, very good.

There's some sloppiness, some posting-while-drunk, some non-native English... but so what? I almost never see flagrant disregard for grammar -- people do their best, most of the time.

(Freeper English is a whole 'nother ball of wax...)

... but I just don't think it's right for anyone, anywhere to act like they're the better party/board/ whatever and rip on other parties/boards/whatever for making the same kind of mistakes that they themselves make and say "Well, when we do it, it's a mistake, but when they do it, it's because they're stupid."

That's all ...

26. Excellent post.
Bryant69 was right - it's a discussion board, and it's enlightening, broadening, and just downright fun to share opinions and information with other liberals. It's not a spelling or grammar test - it's an exchange of ideas. So what if a freeper lurks and quotes something one of us says - including misspelled words and faulty information? That doesn't make DU any less valuable as a medium of exchanging ideas. Certainly not for me, anyway.

And genteel ain't one of my strong suits.

I believe this is true for all human beings. We can all at times be brilliant, and at others dumb as dirt. So be it. That doesn't make us any less equal or important than those who won't admit to their own dirt moments.

42. There is no weakness in being gracious to your fellow human beings
And there should be no pride taken in playing one-up with someone you consider your intellectual inferior. Quite the opposite is true, imho. Being able to cut another down does not make you superior.

I've been in my share of arguments. I am not weak by any stretch of the imagination. I just don't like seeing people I respect for their creativity and ability to connect the dots, put two and two together in an eloquent fashion, stoop so low as to belittle another DUer. It inhibits free-thinking and a feeling of freedom of speech. We want that, don't we? Freedom of speech I mean. That is what this place is about, right?

There should be no fear of appearing weak, unless, of course you are weak. I doubt that is the case.

critique of spelling, grammar and other petty crap, but it is usually just a post here or there that is generally ignored within the thread as just immaturity and stupidity.

What I meant by my statement was that I was wondering if there was a thread I missed today that people were really going off with petty critiques that it became more than just a one post within a thread deal.
