XM Radio -- To subscribe or not to subscribe?
I'm in a quandry. AAR is dead (at least for now) in Phoenix. The station was purchased in November (?) and the new format for the station is Revelation this and Revelation that bringing Phoenix's number of Christian stations to 11 or so.

So, do subscribe to satellite radio? I'm thinking XM because of AAR. Circuit City has a Delphi Roady receiver for $30 after rebates -- is this a decent receiver?

So many questions!

1. I love it.
I have had it for almost a year now. Where I live there was nothing but RW hate radio and I was so sick of listening to our Public Radio station. It was a godsend to me. I can't imagine what I would feel like if I had AAR then lost it.

I don't know what I would do without it now, there is so much to choose from.

2. Why not listen on your computer?
I am currently listening to a radio station from Oregon. Sometimes I listen to one of the BBC Radio 3 broadcasts. A person I work with listens to BBC broadcasts in Spanish so she can keep her vocabulary current. Download some podcasts if you are interested in listening to alternatives while driving. Just some thoughts on getting by cheap.

5. Hmmm
I don't want to take the time to download for drive-time... I like the idea of streaming and do it at work, but I have a long drive home.

Not a bad idea, but it won't work. Heck, I don't even have an MP-3 player.

4. I love satellite radio
but I wish we had gone with XM instead of Sirius. They dumped AAR and lately have been pushing their conservative line-up, which really makes me gag. I like the music, classic radio, and sports coverage; however, XM's sports coverage may be just as good or better.

That said, I'd rather have Sirius than none at all!

6. Look I have Siriius
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 10:56 PM by MissWaverly
The only reason I am saying this is because they made this such a mystigue. I bought
a boombox (for Siriius) on e-bay, then I bought a discounted receiver on amazon. I just
plugged in the boombox and slipped in the receiver, and there is a little wire antenna
I just connected this to my rabbit ears and subscribed, that was it, it came on and they
bill me thru the computer every month. That's it, now you can subscibe w/o a set through
your computer or you can go to the Air America website and live stream it for free.
I am just jumping in here because everyone acted like this was so complicated, it is not.

11. Check eCost.com
I got an XM receiver there free after rebate a few months ago. Watch for their shopping cart specials.

I've had both Sirius and XM. Both have their plusses. For progressive radio, XM wins hands down with the full AAR lineup. Most of the Sirius Left programming sucks, although Bill Press and Thom Hartman can both be worth listening to sometimes.

Is that just for new activations? Now I'm sorry I didn't upgrade before renewing my old Roadie license although I can't bitch about 10 bucks a month. I use it much more than my HBO subscription.

BTW is your email clogged with apologies from all those people that scoffed at you when you said XM would dump Ed Schults and put Randi on live or when you said XM would dump Alan Colmes and put on Mike Malloy? For a while there you were taking a lot of heat for debunking the myths about XM.

16. XM rocks!
You will LOVE it. If you like AAR, XM is the way to go. I have the Dephi SkyFi2 receiver with the boombox. The receiver ejects and can be mounted on a unit in the car, which I don't have because I'm planning on getting rid of my car, but it can go from boombox to kit OR you can put batteries in the boombox and take that with you, which I have done before and it worked great. I put the boombox in the car and never lost the signal! I use to lose Sirius signal all the time, but never have with the XM.

I have found I just can't live without my XM radio. I have it on all day long on AAR, of course.:) I highly recommend it.

17. I have a Roadie... 3 years old...
I travel in different vehicles all over the country and I couldn't live without my XM. I can put my Roadie into any vehicle and be on the road in minutes. I'm sure the newer one is even better but I have no complaints with my first generation Roadie.

I advise getting a 3 year subscription so you get your monthly rate down to the minimum. Only do this after checking out www.xmradio.com and listening to the streams. Sirius is a strong competitor and might have better music choices for you. Then you only have to decide how much you value AAR. I'm just glad that I was with XM from the start especially now that AAR is carried completely live without Alan Colmes!

Hope this helps.

.. a lot of that was in STOCK OPTION, the value rose to $600 million when he started (and he dumped $200+ million in stock right after he started).

And you might want to read the Rolling Stone critque of his show.. in a word... BORING. He has no 'foil' now (ie. the FCC/station Management).

and you just made my point. Sirius has put all their eggs in Howard's basket, and in the long run, it won't be all it's 'cracked up' to be.

60. Sorry
But the Rolling Stone critique of his show means nothing to me. I have actually heard it. One way to put it is that Sirius has all their eggs in one basket. Their basket is far bigger than Stern's show. What Stern does and did was givethem immesuarable publicity and a 2.3 million person anchor subscriber base for 5 years. It's up to them to go from there. You can't tell me XM wouldn't be doing better if they had Stern. There would be no Sirius to talk about if Stern was at XM.

Edited on Sat Mar-04-06 02:47 PM by Rosco T.
Somewhere I have a MP3 of him praising the service.

Then Opie & Anthony came along, and he got a case of the pissy head and went the other way.

And in the long-run it may be good because some analysts think his deal will be the downfall of Sirius because he won't be-able to maintain the base.

he didn't want to go to XM because they wouldn't give him creative control over his show. Sirius did and came up with the cash so he went to Sirius.

We have Sirius and love it (listening right now) and Rolling Stone is wrong - the Stern show is great, his channel line up needs some work outside of his show, but his core show is terrific.

40. sorry, wrong again... and just because Sirius paid bonuses...
.. don't mean that they are doing well.. just stupid management.

and the losses were SLIGHTLY larger than last year.. yet they had 100% more subs in 05 than 04 (6 million plus), so losses PER SUB went WAY DOWN...

Sirius on the other hand, lost $311 million IN JUST THE LAST QUARTER OF 2005, against a subscriber base of 3 million. For the full year Sirius lost $863 million compared with a loss of $712.2 million in 2004.

$863 million loss for 3 million subs vs $651 million (not $666.. nice try) for 6.2 million subs.... you do the math.

So, don't try to RoveSpin it... Sirius is in deep, deep financial trouble.

The Mean Recommendation is 2.1. 1 is a strong buy. 5 is a strong sell. BTW, XM is a 1.9.

42. Repeat after me...
Buy means sell. Sell means buy (sometimes)

I have the write-offs to prove it!

I think both Sir/XM formats are really good. Stern got alot of stock options--not just cash--and he beat his target numbers substantially. Both of these formats have a chance (ala Coke/Pepsi) if they manage their numbers well.

Who'da thought cable was gonna be like this when it first hit?

55. Yeah, but the problem with Stern...
.. is that what started as a $500 million oblgation from Sirius rose to $600 million (since it WAS stock) and Howard dumped $200+ million of stock within a few days of his being there... that didn't help confidence either.

I agree with the Coke/Pepsi analogy, but SIRUS (in some analysts eyes) has been spending money like a drunken sailor with close to 1 BILLION in programming commitments between Howard, Martha, NASCAR, NFL, NBA and the like.. (I still think it's funny that SIRIUS spend the most for the three most VISUAL sports, and BACKED OUT OF MLB TALKS... morans).

33. Please give evidence of "high quality"
I've heard both, and XM sounds better to me. The programming lineup is up to your tastes. Sirius has more "mainstream" radio type music I'd say, while XM has a lot of music you would never hear on FM.

You obviously are a sirius fanboy based on your posts. I'd rather make an objective opinion than attach myself to a particular company.

To the OP, since your main reason for sat radio is AAR, I'd say the choice of XM is a good one :).

41. It's definitely an opinion.
I think Sirius has more high quality, diverse, and "deep" channels than XM. Sirius goes way beyond the music too with a great comedy channel, the GLBT channel, good traffic and weather, full news, Martha Stewarts channel, NFL, NBA, and Nascar next year. I looked at (and listened to) both before I purchased and Sirius made me a "fanboy."

26. I have a roady2---after having switched from sirius
and not wanting to invest a lot since my only use of it is AAR. The Roady2 is great. What I love is the modulator which when you plug in at home allows you to pick up the signal on any radio throughout the house.

With the sirius I had a lot of trouble getting a good constant signal in my house and the set up needed to be plugged into my stereo system which limited the reach of the antenna. Now I can put the antenna in a southern window and hear it on an unconnected radio.

34. I have a Roady & XM
I absolutely love it. My signal only gets fuzzy when I travel to an area that's using my set radio frequency, but there are two other frequencies I can try & get a clear signal.

But don't think you'll be avoideing commercials on AAR. Of course it's easy to flip over to some music you like.

52. I used to have Sirius (3 subscriptions) - canceled them and got XM
For progressive talk, XM destroys Sirius. XM carries the full AAR line-up, Sirius has people like Alex Bennett and Lynn Samuels.

Figure it out. :)

Also, the play lists on the supposed "deep" channels on Sirius are pitiful - their "Vault", which is their deep classic rock channel, absolutely pales in comparison to "Deep Tracks" on XM, and their folk channel is now some bastardized pile of crap called "Coffeehouse." "The Village" on XM is real folk music.

Also, XM is the home for MLB, so if you're a baseball fan you get to hear ALL of your team's games. Also, a lot of college football (but Sirius has that as well), and the NHL. Sirius is the only place to get NFL games, but I have Sunday Ticket on the dish so that doesn't matter to me.

All in all, I LOVE satellite radio, and XM is clearly a better choice than Sirius.

58. add to that XMPR and "Top Tracks"...
as two big winners for XM.

and you're right, the playlists have been analyzed to bits by some independent sources.

XM = miles deep playlists

SIRIUS = FM radio

Apparently Clear Channel hasn't updated their board of Directors bios in a while. My out of date information was a simple mistake that was not my fault. Why do you get so freaking upset about something that means nothing? I will still never buy XM. I really don't care what you say.

78. Once more into the debunk....
The definitive word on XM and Clear Channel

1 - CC dumped ALL their holdings in XM in June 2003. This may be verified by examining the 8K reports and 10K reports with the SEC... easy to do online.

2 - When CC sold its stock, XM removed both Mays brothers from the board of directors. Once again, read the SEC filings from 2003.

3 - Clear Channel has never had any influence on XM's in-house programming. When the T1 was unpluged from the channels they used to provide, that ended their involvement with the channel. The channels belong to XM - they call the shots. As the brochures say, it's 100% original XM Music Programming.

4 - XM ran terrestrial feeds from CCU stations for less than a year (Lite-FM New York, Mix 96.5 Houston, WSIX Nashville, and KIIS Los Angeles) to give them time to get their own programming together. They replaced the feeds when they were ready, plain and simple. (Okay, from what I understand, they dumped KIIS because they screwed Rick Dees, and gave Seacrest a chance until they realized that the show was a giant turd. Prediction: KIIS will soon be erecting billboards all over LA saying "Rick Dees, we're sorry. Come home. Please forgive us." Or they should.)

So you can put all the Clear Channel conspiracy theories to rest. If Clear Channel is screwing up local radio, it's because they're screwing it up, and not because they have a dastardly plan to drive listeners to satellite.

And if you've made the conscious decision to not patronize Clear Channel businesses, you can safely keep your XM subscription because they don't own any part of XM. It's all a matter of public record.

Page 44 of the 10Q (2nd quarter, 2004) states:

Holdings and we are a party to a long-term distribution agreement with OnStar Corporation, a subsidiary of General Motors that provides for the installation of XM radios in General Motors vehicles, as further described in Note 6 to the condensed consolidated financial statements. In connection with the development of our terrestrial repeater network, we were a party to a contract with Hughes Electronics Corporation. DIRECTV has provided consulting services in connection with the development of our customer care center and billing operations. DIRECTV ceased to be a related party during the three-month period ended March 31, 2004. Holdings and we have arrangements with American Honda relating to the promotion of the XM Service to new car buyers, the use of bandwidth on the XM System and the development of telematics services and technologies. We have an agreement with OnStar to make available use of our bandwidth. Clear Channel Communications provides certain programming services to us. Holdings and we have a sponsorship agreement with Clear Channel Entertainment to advertise our service at Clear Channel Entertainment concerts and venues. Premiere Radio Networks, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Communications, has in the past served as one of our advertising sales representatives. Holdings and we also run advertisements on a spot and network basis on radio stations owned by Clear Channel. In addition, we lease 4 sites for our terrestrial repeaters from Clear Channel Communications. Clear Channel Communications ceased to be a related party during the second quarter of 2004.

69. Another Happy XM Subscriber
I don't drive, but I spend a lot of time walking and riding city busses (I live in NYC), so I got the Pioneer portable unit with a docking station for home, and then it works as a headphone portable when I'm "on the road" or, actually, "on the street."

There are some drop outs in the city, but it's not too bad, and reception in my apartment is acceptable. The sound is great, and I can listen to Mike Malloy again after WLIB replaced him with the Satellite Cysters.

I love the Sixties channel, plus the comedy channels, the three classical music stations, and, of course, AAR. By the way, the talk channels are not commercial free.

In fact, I'm Listening to The Beatles A to Zed right now, and loving it.

84. Can't live without it
I do a fair amount of driving for my job,and wouldn't want to be stuck in deep rural Alabama without it. There are many areas where there are no broadcast stations at all (or cell service for that matter). I have it on my computer at work as well, and between the Deep Tracks jazz station and WWOZ New orleans, I'm happy.

The only problem I've had is that the adhesive pad that held the base to the dashboard melted in the summer heat, and I can't find a suitable replacement.
