My son was just deployed in his Americorp unit to Cameron Parrish, La. Just a few miles from where the eye of Rita came ashore. The area is cordoned off and he will be stationed with a group of US Marines who are also patrolling and helping out in the area.
Here's a bit of his impressions going in:
"We made it to Cameron Base Camp today at around four pm. I was driving the last leg of the trip. Every house we passed in the last twenty minutes before our arrival was destroyed. Everyone on my team was inappropriately jovial and wondered why I was silent. It doesn't seem like we will make much of a difference. Even if the homes are rebuilt, so much of the ecology is destroyed. There is trash in every tree. There were scattered fires by the side of the road as we drove in as well. Maybe controlled burns?"

I'm pleased he is involved with Americorps but sorry he is disillusioned.
You clearly raised him right with environmental and realistic concerns.
I hope his experience will feel at the very least marginally productive over time.
Send him hugs from DU.
