10. There wasn't one.
They skipped it to talk about Kirby Puckett's death.

6. He's missing the point.
Jon was giving Hollywood a hard time about how they can be a bit pretentious.

And the part about him "not having a joke" or "I don't know what my point is" is part of Jon's routine. I don't think Keith watches the Daily Show.

Disappointing episode - Kirby Puckett's death put a damper on the show, but we get picking on Jon when we tune in to see him push O'Reilly a bit farther toward insanity.

I gave up on that game when they started selling Tweety squares by the hour. The Dobbs game is an interesting twist, though. Jun 18th? I think that might be a little optimistic. Lou will give a graduation speech somewhere and he'll need to take it up tempo. I think by May 23rd he'll be on the side of Al Queda owning US ports and DayCare Centers.

Stewart was a middling host. Better than Chris Rock or David Letterman, but not by much. Crystal and Carson remain the modern standard.

14. I keep wondering why they don't just get Jay Leno
He's mild, non-abrasive, and can make a gentle jibe without getting too serious.

That's really what they want.

33. Leno is likeable though...
and very Hollywood--he is a natural to do the show being the Tonight Show host...but it could be a network thing or a Leno thing, especially after they asked Letterman to do it...

22. If there was any big problem with Stewart hosting
it was probably that Hollywood people can't laugh at themselves being snarked, and they need to have every joke spelled out in big letters so it's like it says "JOKE--LAUGH HERE."

Stewart should've known better and stayed away! KO would have the same problem if it were him--he might be able to do a slightly better job of trying to be serious when seriousness was called for, but eventually all the pretension would have gotten the better of him, he'd have unleashed the snark and he'd have a bunch of actors and actresses looking daggers at him.

27. Honestly - the audience looked totally dumb
like Jon's humor was too smart for them and he confused them. I said to my husband, "These actors are not smart enough to get the humor that my 11 year old gets - look at the dumb looks on their faces." We were actually cracking up at how Jon's audience is 100 times smarter than all those supposedly "liberal" elites out there in Hollywood.

20. Not sure what Keith said...
BUT Stewart was a disappointment to be sure--not as bad as Letterman, but not as good as Whoopi either.

His jokes stunk, his adlibs were terrible and the ONLY good thing were the election style attack ads for the various categories...

Oh and he did something that he does way too much on his on show--the Jewish thing?
I counted at least 3 refs last time; all stupid and all lowered the temperature in the place a few degrees. Just like his show?

What's up with that?

You can watch a decade of Leno and you likely only hear Leno refer to his Italian heritage once in a blue moon. Even Conan is not that bad anymore with his 'Irish' stereotype cheap laffs.

OH and what exactly was Stewart doing when HE KNEW the show was overtime; he again gets a cheap applause for Bill Conti. Note that Stewart was pretty much toast after that--Hanks came on and then Jack and NO Stewart.

Bad move for him--he showed he was mortal and nervous.

30. I think there was more than meets the eye...
I think Stewart had 'edgy' material but it was cut during the show and Stewart probably quite rightly pissed off and simply walked through the last half.

Rem he quipped something like "next set of clips will be Oscar's salute to Oscar clips"? I think he and his team had a lot more material prepared, but it was cut at the last minute (he was probably told--'time') and those pointless clips were shown. The funniest one was the tribute to the Big Screen Epic? shown on TV..!!! Gawd how dumb...

Also note...when Hanks came out, just after Stewart wasted even MORE time on 'purpose' pushing the orchestra again...you can read Hanks lips as he is looking right at Stewart and he looks like he said, "What the fuck are you doing?" Hanks was pissed and IF you notice--no more Stewart after that...

I am sure like you said there might be MORE censoring going on that we suspect and Stewart may very well have been 'sabotaged'...imagine your doing a show like this live and the teleprompter doesn't have YOUR material on it...yer kinda fucked, if you know what I mean.

36. That may have happened.
Stewart did look perplexed at times, like when he said something about "thats all I have here" and there was another time that the audience was waiting on a punchline, and Stewart acknowledged that there was none. Not exact words Im quoting from the show here, just a kind of feeling he gave off.
Like what you said. Maybe they censored him ..Id be livid but Jons at the mercy of the big shots who can ruin a guy.

You got it...
I'll give him a benefit of a doubt--he wasn't any good, but something happened because Stewart is very polished and professional, he's proved it--he is a deadly ad-libber and there was none that...

He looked like a deer in headlights--BUT yer right and I am glad someone saw the same show I watched.

"just a kind of feeling he gave off. " You nailed it...

Bill Maher, Mike Malloy, Keith O, and Jon Stewart are human beings. Sometimes they have differences of opinions on things the way I do. Thats the nature of the universe. DTA dont trust anybody.

31. I kind of agreed
I love Jon, but the Oscars are not his best venue - he is a political satirist first. I don't think he sucked, he was just not in his best context.

That being said, the "Gay Cowboy" clips were PRICELESS. :D

37. Just a network test run
for Jon to replace Letterman on Late Night.
In 2009 it'll be Conan O'Brien (NBC) vs. Jon Stweart (CBS) and Jon will win, ending NBCs 50 year hold on 11:30pm.
Jon is in line to be the Johnny Carson of our time.
Maybe Keith is just a little envious?

38. Jon was brilliant! But....
Before I go any further, let's consider the basic tenets of Liberalism, Progressivism, or whatever you want to call it.

Now, think about this: Jon is a New Yorker. This was California. Think of the cultural differences between the two.

Seriously, New York and Hollywood are as diffrent as Night and Day.

And yet, they are both Liberal.

OK, Jon had problems playing to his audience... because he didn't really KNOW his audience. He was brilliant, but many of his jokes fell flat because of a different point of reference. He had problems "connecting" with the audience because he was, well, from a different world.

But instead of focusing on the differences between the East Coast and the West Coast, let's focus on the issues that are obviously so fundamental to every human being that we all agree on them, despite our "coastal" orientation. And be proud and assuredin the fact that if too so fundamentally differently and dimetrically opposed cultures can agree on the same fundamental principles, then those principles must be worth fighting for, by BOTH cultures!

BTW, this is coming from someone in Nashville, the "Third Coast".

PS, this was definitely George Clooney's night. From the opening sequence (Jon: "is this a dream?" George: "no" Jon: "YES!"), to George's acceptance speech ("I'm PROUD to 'out of touch'!"), to the Memphis TN group (hey, I'm a Tennessean, I have to bring up the fact that Volunteers made out big!) that shouted out to George because he showed them love from the first time...

Hey, the 3rd coast supports George of the West coast, George supports Jon of the East Coast. Jon supports George of the West Coast.

We have ourselves a MOVEMENT!!!!

Let's not f*ck it up, ok?
